As my AK conversion draws closer to an end I get the freedom of looking at things like aesthetics more. As far as durability goes, it seems like the word on the street is that high temp engine paint is the way to go, so that's what I got (Rustoleum brand). It has quite a reputation for being tough, but when I painted my gas block it turned out as a matte gray, in pretty sharp contrast to the semi gloss of the barrel and the receiver, which I like. I imagined the whole rifle in this finish, and didn't like it.
My question is: can I simply paint over the engine paint with a semi gloss black and get the benefits of the tough stuff underneath, but with the look of the original factory finish? If so, what do you recommend that would replicate the look of the factory Saiga finish?
