I just received my rcbs die set from Brownells marked "F L Die Set 7.62mmx54R Russian" with p/n 29001, but the dies inside are engraved "7.62mm RUSS FL-20". There is a note inside saying that the "7.62x39mm" sizing/depriming die comes with a .311 expander installed , but a .308 expander is included (and it is). Did they just put the wrong note in with the dies? Anyone confirm the rcbs full length 7.62x54r dies say 7.62mm RUSS FL-20?? Thanks.

If you are concerned that you got the wrong die, have you checked to see if a case fits? There can be little confusion between 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r. Should be obvious from just looking at the opening which one the die is, x54r is huge comparatively.

Was there a extra expander in the box? Maybe the 7.62x54R can use the .308dia bullets also? My RCBS 7.62x39 die's are clearly marked "7.62x39"

What is on your die indicates it was a full length sizing die made in 2020. They put the same note in dies for 7.62X54 and 7.62X39 now and may have put the wrong paper in the box. Used to get both stems in the die set but cost cutting? Or did you get one expander installed and the other loose in the box. That's how mine came. I would size a brass to make sure it is for the length of brass you want. I would say you got the wrong piece of paper.

It has both expanders. .311 installed and .308 loose in the case. I guess the 54r and 39 both use the same expanders anyway. I don't have a 39 case to judge the die size. I didn't want to get a 54r case stuck in the die by trying to resize it, so figured I'd ask. If 7.62x39 is actually stamped on the 39 dies, then 7.62mm Russ must be the 54r, and I have the right dies. Thanks for the replies.

With die in one hand and a 7.62x54r case in the other, it would literally be stupid obvious to determine which round it was without sticking the case into the die. Look up the base diameters, the x54r is huge compared to x39.

Yes, you can replace the .311 expander with .308; My Lee 7.62x54R and 7.62x39 die sets both came with a .311 and a .308 expander. I loaded my 7.62x54R hunting round with .308 dia. bullets, there's a much better selection, and accuracy is good enough for deer where I hunt.

As I said in a stupidly obvious way already, I don't have an x39 case. I don't shoot x39. I have an unfired x54r case and it fits 3/4 into the sizer die before hitting friction. These are the first rcbs dies I bought, and I'm confused as to why they don't just put x54r on the dies. They put x39 on the x39 dies after all. Both are Russian. They could also put the appropriate note regarding the expanders in the case. Would help to stop any confusion. So far not impressed with rcbs attention to detail. At this point I assume nobody responding here can confirm that 7.62mm RUSS is what rcbs calls 7.62mmx54R on their dies? I'm assuming it is.

I tried calling rcbs before posting here, but they don't answer. I'm on a call back list.

You have 7.62 x 54 dies , just checked mine . I also have 7.62 x 39mm dies .

Extra sizer is for the Finnish rifles rebarreled to .308 bore diameter; the 7.62x53R or for the people who rattle .308 bullets down a .311 bore.
