I have an active thread going about motorizing this case trimmer, but this question is about the case trimmer itself....

When I insert the brass in place in the universal shell holder, the mouth of the brass will not line up with the collet on the trimmer head. The collet (yes I have the correct one) strikes the mouth of the brass on the flat part of the collet and doesn't line up as intended. I have spun and fumbled with the brass trying to make sure it is seated in the chuck jaws properly. No matter what I tried, it strikes the brass lip at about 2 o'clock consistently. There is basically no adjustment that I am aware of unless someone reads this and offers advice. I have been manually lifting the brass mouth to make fit onto the collet properly but this is clearly not right. If I buy the motorized kit for this trimmer I have a problem.

I have added a shim like a scope shim between the mount body and the shell holder head. This works ok but I still think I am missing something here. Ideas?

Contact RCBS. Some of the best customer service in the universe. They may have an idea, or just replace unit. I'm sure you've determined there's nothing in the shell holder that would be causing the case to be out of alignment. I'd also check if there's any wear on the rod that holds the collet, mine did wear, even with consistent lubrication, and RCBS replaced it. I noticed a little wobble when turning the handle before engaging the mouth of the case.

I honestly think the base of the unit was mfg out of tolerance. I have tried everything imaginable including the things you suggested. There is only one screw holding the shell holder assembly to the base as well as only one screw attaching the cutter assembly to the base. It almost boils down to it either aligns properly when attached...or doesn't. I'll call RCBS for advice and ask their opinion. If I plan to add the motorized unit, the collet needs to align with the case mouth properly. By hand as I'm doing now, I have to gently lift the case mouth up and over to match the cutter/collet's position. This is very frustrating.

Been there, got a new base from RCBs, still out of wack. Finally bought a new one, it's not amazing, but better. I have the RCBS motor so I gotta stick with their trimmers.

I have the manual one version #1 which uses individual collets. I adapted it to attach to a electric drill.

Call RCBS they il get you fixed up. Folks always say how great the Smurfs are but RCBS is as good or better.

Sounds like the Shim is on backwards, should be flat side against the trimmer

The jaws are spring loaded, with a toothed surface against the case base. If you don't center the case, the teeth grab the case just enough to leave the jaws uneven, so your PILOT (not collet) won't find its way home into the case mouth.

Give the spring relief lever a little bump after you insert the case, it'll let loose just a little and the jaws will even up. Give it another little bump when you feed the pilot into the case mouth. That will let the case base float a little and let he jaws even up, so everything will center up.

I use a handheld power driver to drive mine. I had a powered unit, factory style, but it's huge and the spring advance didn't work worth a d@mn. I do a lot better with the power driver, mine has an intermittent pressure switch, and the turn speed is exactly where I want it to be.
