I am interested in buying RCBS X dies for .308 and .223. My son and I shoot various models of the same caliber Rock river/ Saiga / Colt, etc. and I wonder if I should get small base dies just to avoid potential chambering problems.
Just getting started in the large volume reloading thing so any advice would be appreciated
    Thanks

You shouldn't need small base, even for an autoloader ... they do work the brass, and thereby shorten its life, more than a regular FL die.

For information about the X-die try:

I have one and it works as advertised. Mine is a small base as well. Also about small base. You will find several different opinions about whether they are needed or not. I tried to search and find a thread I remembered with good discussion but the search feature is down right now.

The truth is they do work the brass more than a regular FL die thus shortening the life. They are useful for tight chambered autoloaders and/or oversize machine-gun brass. However, do you need one? Only experimenting with your brass and rifle will tell. Most can probably get away with FL only.

I kinda wish I had tried a FL before I bought my small base. My Fal eats everything.

Most auto-loaders will eat anything. The common Small Base warning is another example of "conventional wisdom" being B.S. more often than not.
