mnriverrat's thread on recoil operated semis got me started. I been wanting to do this for a while anyway (gotta blame somebody ;) ).

Dug out my old 11-48 today. I bought this gun in 1971. A friend had bought it at K-Mart for $99 and then had a heart attack. Dr said no more hunting, so I bought the gun (fired six times) for $75.

I used it for all my hunting from then until about 1983 when I bought my Citori, and haven't fired it since. My son used it for a couple years or so after me. The gun has seen countless duck blinds, goose pits, dove and pheasant fields. It only broke once, and the gunsmith recommended retiring it then. I didn't.

Pulled it out of the closet today. Just some minor rust on the receiver. Cleaned that up with some four-ought and oil, tore her down and cleaned and lubed as best as I could.

High forties today with a stiff breeze, not a good day to shoot clays. Besides, Sandy is sick and I don't have the time. But, I grabbed nine shells, seven promo #8's and a couple of 1.25 oz 6's. There is some pumpkins in the garden needin' killin'.

The old girl shoulders and points much better than I remember (I did have her fitted to me way back when). Pumpkins don't have a chance.

Barrel is fixed mod choke and throws a fist sized pattern at 9 yards. AND, she doesn't kick nearly as much as I remember.

Glad I kept the old girl.:)

Mark the calendar folks - I am not at blame this time.

Never heard of a dedicated pumpkin shotgun...never knew the correct load for pumpkins either, always learning always will it seems...
Must be a CO thing.

I know in TX one uses a 1911 in 45ACP to keep snakes from stealing cantaloupes, I mean I was the one supposed to be stealing them...

Last 11- 48 I fired - Belongs to a gal about so tall and really cute. She uses hers for gun events...and HD. Keeps the boys at bay, both range and at home...;)

I was shooting it to keep Jalapeno Peppers, and Sharp Cheese happy. Had to fell some doves out back to do this...the things I do to ensure happiness I swear...;)

Steve,

The stock had dried out on the ends. I used some oil finish called "New Wood" from a supplier of mine to get it back to somewhat what it looked like way back when.

Wish I had known of your advice to seal the end-grain with Johnson's Wax back then.
correct load for pumpkins
8's work fine, but 1.25 oz 6's are better. ;)

Seeing this is a good way to start off the morning, Larry. Bet that old 48 has some hunts left in it.....
