my ruger 220 swift 26" bull barrel mfg.1976 will be needing a new barrel in the near future -- since this rifle has been/is an extremely good shooter i really am not looking for much in the way of improvement but rather for a high quality barrel that will maintain the shooting experience i have enjoyed for many years --
would appreciate any advice and a "guestimate" of cost -- it still has the original barrel -- i will also probably have the action polished and drop in a new trigger -- any advice would also be appreciated here

Having had a guided tour of Bo Clerke's barrel-making operation in Raton, NM, I'm partial to his products. He makes .17, .20 and .22 barrels. Sez he can hold one ten-thousandth. It's worth a phone call, anyway.

barrel cost

s.forktraveller,
Really the quality of the job and the amount you spend will dictate the quality of the result. I recently had a rifle rebarrelled which cost me £400. However this was for a relatively cheap stainless barrell and carried out in a friends shop.. the result is an moa rifle. i think that the incremental difference in performance probably narrows the higher up the price ladder you go.

I did the same thing with a Remington .25-06 a few years ago. Look around and compare prices, you could save a lot of money. I went with a Krieger barrel but had a local benchrest builder do the work, saved me about $200.

It sounds as tho that rifle has provided lots of enjoyment. As such i dont think id cheap out on either the barrel or work. A "match" grade or better barrel from a good manufacturer, of which there are a number, and the work done by a professional should be round 6-800 or so. If you want more action work then just smothing it out and properly installing your tube it will be pricier.

If you decide to go less expensive, i personally like e.r. shaw. They have done a barrel and a full rifle for me. Accuracy is good on both guns and the work was very affordable.
