I was interested in reading R. L. Wilson's book he mentioned that the US Model 1911 pistol was made by Colt, Rem/UMC, Springfield Armory, and Winchester? That was a new one on me. I only knew about the first three, unless it's a typo. Please enlighten.

Howdy BigG,
I THINK I heard somethin' about a Winchester-made 1911, but I mighta been drunk.
They were also made by Remington Rand...Union Switch & Signal,
Ithaca, and Singer..with Union Switch & Signal and Singer taking top honors
for most rare. Singers are so rare that a nice one that is original and
correct can fetch upward of 15 thousand dollars.
I've got at least one of each except a Singer. I've got a Singer
frame that's wearin' a Colt slide, but that don't count no ways.

The model of 1911 was made for WWI; the Model of 1911A1 began in 1926, IIRC. Two different animals as far as manufacture is concerned. The 11A1 was made by a bunch of mfrs, whereas the Model of 1911 was only made by Colt, SA, Rem/UMC, and maybe Winchester. That was my question. Did Winchester produce Model of 1911 pistols? According to the book, yes, I was trying to see if they made a mistake. Did they?

That's what I get for lumpin' all 1911s into the same category...and
not readin' the whole thread. My term for the originals is WW1 era,
though I know that the A-1 version came years after the Great War ended.
As far as I know, the three that you mentioned were the manufacturers

Winchester Model of 1911?
Reading a little deeper into the text I think I found the answer: Winchester and several other firms received contracts from Uncle Sam to produce the Model 1911, however they were unable to get production started before WWI was over, therefore, the contracts were cancelled.
