Woodchuck season starts in about a month and I need some sort of rear bag for shooting prone. Any recommendations?

How much weight are you willing to carry??

I use a standard Gamechanger when weight's not a concern:

You can get a pint sized and save some weight/bulk or go with Git-lite fill ($$)

When weight/space is a premium, I use a Thunderbird Long Range, Mini-Tacky with Git-Lite fill. I use this for both a rear bag and I've been using it on a ball head.

I'm really, really liking the Mini, it's easily strapped to my pack and still does a good job.

cut the leg off a old pair of blue genes .tie one end off ,fill with sand, beens or rice . not to full . tie off the end and wallah you have a bag

For field use, I carry a Wiebad Mini Fortune Cookie with poly pellet fill. It’s not as solid as heavy sand filled bags, but it’s not as heavy. I can use it prone as a rear bag, or use it as a support bag over tree limbs, fence posts, truck bed rails, etc.

Otherwise, I use a bag like this that I make - Wiebad sells one called the “Cube” which is very similar. Just a pellet filled cylinder. I run my strap around the side so I can stick my hand through and give some extra control with less grip fatigue.

I would say middle of the road. Most of the time I’m not far from the truck and others 1/4-1/2 mile.

In a pinch you could use a Hot Seat cushion. I carry one for sitting on the ground behind a fabric blind but have used it over tree limbs or scrunched up between legs and chest as a stock support. Lightweight, comes with a carry clip, and cheap. I don’t profess to it being a best option but probably available at any Walmart.

My expedient option is a sock filled with rice ........ I need to look into getting one of those real bags though. There's limitations to how useful those are, especially in the rain.

We would have the riggers make them out of a piece of cloth from an old BDU top. If you have access to a sewing machine and know how to use it they are easy to make. The best filler for a home made one is plastic airsoft BB's. They don't weigh anything, they roll around nicely in the bag, when they get wet they don't gain weight or reconstitute, and if you store it in a garage the mice won't eat it.

I tried all sorts of rear bags that I was never quite happy with. Bought a 5 lb bag of rice in woven bag and pretty happy with it. Plus its cheap.

Edit: I prefer medium to long grain rice, for what its worth. To eat. Not for shooting with. That would be silly.

I currently use a Pint-Sized Game Changer but for many years I used a sock filled with plastic beads. Don't remember the source of the beads, but they are not perfectly round; flat-sided beads give the bag a bit more stability.
