I'm in the army, I am going to replace the front sight post on my m4 with a tritium sight and would like to do the same with the rear. However I'm uncertain if I need to be looking for something special so the rear will be at the right height to line up with the front sight post (our m4's use the traditional front sight but do not have a carrying handle for the rear sight).

I need sugestions as to what would work for this.

Sounds like you're looking for something like this, except with a flip-up rear instead of a replacement aperture for a fixed rear.

I don't know of such a product, but I would pair the above aperture with this if you're really set on tritium irons.

troy makes a flip up with a tritium rear, but I was uncertain if something like that woud line up with my front sight on my m4.

I have just found I am more comfortable with the iron sights than I am with the optics they can supply me.

Many high speed shooters recommend not using a tritium rear; just a front. That said, many good rear back up sights will match up to your front. To be certain, look at your front sight; it should be marked with an "F"; I think on the right side.

Troy is a battle proven back up that you can bet your life to.

Thanks for your service.

When I was in the Army we weren't allowed to make these types of changes to our issue weapons. Is this common nowadays?

I guess I'm a little confused - is your new front sight a different height than a standard front sight? Why wouldn't your existing rear aperture work.

Seems everyone is recommending flip up options, why? If he is not setting up for an optic, I'd rather have a fixed rear sight. This isn't a back up iron sight, it's his primary.

Well, he was a little unclear as to whether he would be using any sort of optic. Given the propensity of using optics, it only makes sense to suggest a folding backup.

But Lebowski has a point. If you aren't using any sort of optic, a fixed rear would better suit your needs.

Edited to add: Ocelot, you should ask for more range time to get better familiar with your M68 or Eotech; they prove to be much faster on target than standard sights.

For rear irons on a AR: Larue for fixed, Troy for folding.

That said, I've shot with tritium rear sights installed on a AR at night before. The aperture is so close to your eye that the tritium blinds you with glare. Much better to use only the front tritium with an AR and use the large aperture rear sight. It's pretty fast (not as fast as an Aimpoint) and rugged.
