I have an H and R buffalo classic in 45-70, I love it and it is a ton of fun to shoot but the rear sight doesn't allow much elevation change and really limits a hot loaded 45-70's long range potential. I really like the vernier type ladder sights that are tang mounted but the H and R doesn't have a traditional tang to mount it to. It is however drilled and tapped for scope mounts... any ideas?

You don't need a hot .45-70 for long range potential. Black Powder .45-70's are used for 1000 yard matches, and will one-shot-drop a buffalo out at a few hundred yards. When hunting buffalo, you have to make sure there's no animal behind the one you want to shoot, since the bullet will go straight through and kill the second one. I couldn't tell the entry from the exit, when we butchered a buffalo I shot with a .45-70 BP load -- the bullet just sailed on through.

The big bullet does its work with size and momentum. Think freight train: slow speed, but it doesn't slow down easily. Velocity may be necessary to get a .270 to kill an elk, but not a .45-70.

This guy had a "false tang", actually a sight base, and a tang sight added.

Williams WGRS offers some elevation adjustment, but not like a tall tang sight. Depends on the range you're talking about.

Hmmm.. thanks for the info!

I like the one from buffalo arms, but it is almost as expensive as the gun!

I am just leery drilling into the stock... getting it straight and stuff... plus it is really nice walnut and I would hate to ruin it. would I send it off to a gunsmith or a woodworker?

The Smith one is a winner, for sure. Used one on a friend's Buffalo Classic, been eying one for my rifle ever since... :)

Holy thread revival!

So I finally ordered the Smith Enterprises sight from Brownells and I have a few questions. I assume it comes with screws and you just screw it into the existing holes on the rifle and hopefully everything should line up and be straight.

So who has one?
Any problems?
Pros and Cons?
How far have you shot with it?

Thanks!
