There was a thread started in Laws and regs. talking about what you could use as a good reason for obtaining a permit to carry.

Ill probably get a nastygram from a mod. but, want to ask again if you guys have any good ideas abount what to present as a valid reason for a 'normal' citizen to carry. Something that has worked for you or is more likely to work than just "its my right as an American"

What Wolf said.
Finally, the Great State of North Carolina has recognized at least some of our 2nd amendment rights.
Hope your state does too.

You have to have a reason? Down here in SC, we just tell 'em we want one, take our test, and pays our money. We don't have to give a reason.

Test? What is this test of which you speak?
No test needed hereabouts.

Florida is a "Shall Issue" state. Take a Class, pass the BG check and pay the fees and the state "shall issue" you a Carry Permit.

It seems to me that a lot of places that want you to have a reason before you can get a permit leave the control process to the local Sheriffs and not the State.

It's not much of a test. Pretty much if you can read and understand basic english, and shot 50 rounds into a standard B60 target at a max of 25 feet, you pass.

In PA, or at least my part of PA, you have to indicate your reason for wanting the license, most people (me included) put "self defense" which is then printed on the license.

PA is shall issue.

Don't know why they want a reason, but I suppose if you put "Makes it easier to rob people" you may have to wait longer for the license to be issued.:D

I just renewed my handgun purchase permit and it seems the forms have changed, at least in my county. I didn't apply for a CCW, but there was no blank for a reason any more. There was just a space asking for a firearms safety certificate and completion of a practical examination, whatever that means. I have been meaning to talk to the sheriff but with the holidays I haven't gotten there. The bad thing about Minnesota is the CCW stuff varies from county to county; a lot of discretion. I'll try to stop in and ask after the first of the year.

When I lived in Massachusetts and got my carry permit (yeah, they do occasionally issue them), I put "in order to comply with the laws of the state" as my reason. Variations from friends are similar, "to be legal", etc.

Might not work for you, but worked for me.

find out what your net-worth is (mortgage value, property, bank accounts, etc ... I don't know what all is factored in there). once you know that, say that you routinely carry xyz value wherever you go. maybe bump up the figure a little to take into account life insurance coverage, grief, lost pay, etc.

Where I live, in Washington State, it's been "shall issue" since sometime in the 1930's I believe.

We need no reason to get a CCW, nor is there any form of test.

We don't test people before we let them speak or vote, do we?

Frankly, I think the CCW is an actual infringement, but then I tend to read the BoR pretty literally.

We used to have to write "Personal Protection" on the back of our applications here in Indiana. But I didn't have to the last time I renewed.

The LEO that helped me file my first application (you used to be able get a permit in Indiana at 18, don't know if it's still that way) told me specifically to use that exact phrase.

I didn't need any official reason; TN doesn't ask. The reason I carry, though, is because I'm a musician here and some of the places I wind up working at some of the hours... well, that's enough reason!

You don't need a reason in Wyoming..

Why do I carry a gun??

I carry a gun because there is evil in this world. It strikes in churches, McDonalds, the library, at home and in traffic.
It comes to restaurants, parking lots, and movie theaters.

When it comes, you won't have time to wait for the police. It will come suddenly without warning and with unbelievable violence.
I believe it is my job as a man to protect my family and other innocents from evil.

Generations of Americans have fought and died to protect this country, their families and friends.

It is my right and my duty to follow in their footsteps if called upon to do so..

I cannot claim authorship of this.. I saw part of it posted on one of the forums and I have modified it somewhat to express my opinions..

A reason is not needed in Texas....If so, it would be a matter of self protection.

I would say because it's my 2nd amendment and therefore the Bill of Rights "should be" the only license needed (effective 1791, expires never). But alas...........

The reason is very simple. You alone are responsible for your own security. No one has the right to tell you you cant protect yourself, although they do on a regular basis, the "permit" being one of them.(VT withstanding) The governments have covered their asses by giving themselves immunity if they dont protect you, and make it difficult to protect yourself. You should consider the CCW to be a "learners permit". Take advantage of it to learn to wear your pistol without much fear of arrest until your comfortable with it. That way, when they "take"(and eventually they will, Homeland Security comes to mind) your rights, you'll be well practiced at wearing your shooter. Go over to the JPFO site and get a copy of "Dial 911 and die", its a good read. And while your there, read "Last of the Bohicans".

Thank god I don't live in California so when I'm old enough to apply, I can cite the 2nd amendment. :p

NY is a shall NOT issue state Onondaga Co. is real bad

You have to show cause in Onondaga County. This cause must set you aside from the general population. This cause can not be personal protection. This is all due to the Infamous Judge Mulroy. Who has been removed from the bench.

In PA, or at least my part of PA, you have to indicate your reason for wanting the license, most people (me included) put "self defense" which is then printed on the license.

I think that is the type of license, not the reason.

You can indicate "HUNTING", in which case you will be issued a permit that allows handgun hunting, but not concealed carry. I believe that is a less expensive fee too.

As a "shall issue" commonwealth, we don't have to offer a reason - just apply for the license that we want.
