I've been reading the 642 thread.

Don't have a 642, but do have a Tauria 85 CIA (shrouded hammer).
Blue with pearl handles, and gold trigger. Call it my "pimp gun".

Purchased with the hope that my girlfriend would find it less intimidating visually.

The Taurus is generally my everyday pocket carry, unless I'm wearing bulkier clothing.

Also, no problems with accuracy and reliability after 500+ rounds.

Is the S&W so much better that its worth selling the Taurus 85 (at a big loss) and getting a S&W?

Certainly not in my book. If you can shoot it accurately & it is reliable, why go with anything else?

I've had 4 Taurus Model 85's. Three were stainless, one was an ultralight. One (not the ultralight) had a shrouded hammer. I've also own or owned several other Taurus revolvers over the years. I still own two (the 85 and a .357 Tracker)

I sold all the stainless guns and kept the ultralight. All nice guns, but the SS models are a bit heavy for pocket carry (most frequent mode of carry).

Other then a problem with light strikes (with the ultralight) initially, the Taurus has been an outstanding carry weapon. I would never sell (especially at a loss) to buy another brand.

S&W is a nice gun, but I don't see any higher quality then a Taurus...not the ones I've bought anyway.

If it works for you and you have proven it with 500 rounds and like it, why sell it for an unknown quantitiy? I only sell guns I don't like or don't live up to my expectations, I keep what works and what I like.

Absolutely not! Keep the Taurus AND buy the 642. The more snubbies you own the better. Note: If you get the 642, you will not be disappointed.

I don't know why you would even raise the question. Keep the Taurus. If you step up or down in caliber, take a look at the Smith & Wesson offerings. I have no experience with Taurus and I have no problem buying one if it suits my purpose or need.

Well other than it being ugly as sin and afront to all that is good and natural.....:neener:

Just kidding.

If it works, shoots straight and is reliable, there is no reason to get the Smith other then gun snobbery, which we all have to one degree or another but the fact is, if the tool works then there is no reason to get rid of it.

While the Taurus is a bit heavier it generally has a better trigger than the S&W J-frames. There should be no need getting rid of a known proven gun at a loss for a similar model from another maker.

The pearl handles and gold trigger would be enough for me.

But since Taurus (atleast here) dont bring anything used I'd keep it and look for a used 642. Or do what i did and save a little and get the 442.
