Received a Bit Of a Scare

for reasons I can't fully understand he all of sudden appears around the opposite side of the pump between my little car and the pump.

Either he was looking for the blue paper towel dispensor to check his oil, or the squeegie to wash his windows....

I just had to speak to my wife about waiting around for the pump receipt last night.... only to have them accumulate in her purse and then get thrown out at a later date. Based on comments I've gleened on THR, I always press NO for "do you want a receipt" and very rarely go into gas station convenience stores (everything is much cheaper at the grocery store in case you didn't know).

In and out... ... CC in hand b4 I exit car... keys go into front pocket as soon as I stand up....swipe card and put it in front pocket... no fumbling with wallet... head on a swivel assessing all two legged passers by... always get gas on way home from work ... avoid the stations with a lot of bummy foot traffic.

One station is family owned and the grandpa or uncle is always hanging out learing and scowling at everyone who comes and goes. I stopped going there as I am tired of being looked at with suspicion and figure they must have quite a few problems if they need to post a watcher.

Forum, actually I should have worded my statement that at that moment they did appear to be threat or pose threatening behaviour.

Gotcha, I took it differently when I read it. My mistake. :)

You know SSN Vet makes a very valid point in post #51 in the way to go thru the gas and go drill we MUST do to power our vehicles and scoot through this life of ours.
Unfortunately the part about the bummy foot traffic, although valid, does not work so much on the low rent side of town.
And that's precisely where a lot of us work and live.
It's just the way it is in real life America.
Myself, well, I keep a good eye out and I am a law abiding citizen who lives in a state that thinks very poorly of criminal behaviour, and has a CHL to protect himself in the drastic event of violent crime directed towards himself if it comes to that sort of disaster.
Whether you live in the suburbs or my side of town at the end of the day people must function daily in a semi normal state of sanity as if everything is fine but must always be aware of what's happening around them.
"Good side" of town or not.

Exactly.

I see no good reason to actually go inside the store.
The only reason I ever stop at a gas station is to get fuel and nothing else.
And I keep my back against my truck cab while pumping.

I consider myself to very much live in "real life America" .... but for me that's not urban America.

I consider myself fortunate to live in a more rural setting, but just because I do, doesn't mean that I haven't lived in dumpy city settings in times gone by (Detroit being one of them) and can't relate to the day to day issues there in.

Going into the convenience store to buy scratch tickets is not a choice I would make today, and is definately not a choice I would have made on 7th ave in Motown.

For me it's kind of like going out bar hopping on New Years eve. The risk reward calculation just doesn't make the cut for me personally.

This video was taken from a gas station that's in a pretty safe location.
But it shows what can happen.

One of these druggies finds out a .45 does hurt.

Cop narrates whole scene.

Thanks for sharing. I'm guessing in a case like this you are screwed as you are stuck between your car and the pumps. If someone comes up it's best to just walk to the other side of the car or maybe back in the store?

This is a scary situation.

Yes,very scary.
Some here say you should get your gas early in the morning.
I prefer bright natural daylight.
Either way these types of people can and will be out on the streets.
Frankly when that guy came up on the victim from behind while he was pumping gas,had that been me my senses would have hit redline on the mental tachometer and I would have stepped back and told him to come no closer because he had no business accosting him in that manner as a total stranger.
Obviously everyone's got a different take on these things.

i also think i would change the way in which i carry my firearm. then i would try to fill up somewhere safer. maybe a sams club that has membership requirments or another gas station in a better part of town. you showed good awareness though & most importantly didn't become a victum. if this is still on your mind, how much more is it probably on the mind of the guy who had his cell phone taken? hopefully this will be a wake up call for him.

Sorry but that constitutes brandishing and will get you arrested and cost you your ccw permit.

...not to mention the very real risk of being shot down by a police officer, or by an armed citizen in justifiable self defense.

Surely that was not what the poster intended to describe.

he was refering to his credit card, i think

:D

Was waiting for that. Thanks for not letting me down...

When pocket carrying, I occasionally have my hand on my pistol though it is not presented. I can stand casually pumping gas, hand in my pocket at the ready and alert, but weapon not close to being considered brandished. Very strong condition orange will elicit this response.

Not implying that is what was meant, but it is possible.

Interesting how gas stations became hangouts for bad guys. I don't see that where I live, but is very evident in other nearby south-west states I visit.

It's important to fail the interview. I return looks my way by returning a look that makes it clear I've seen them.

Side observation, all the cell phones on belts, under shirts have helped us concealed carriers. Slight printing is likely to be construed as a cell phone.

Harrygunner, fuel stations here in Houston are also pretty much stores and as such seem to attract bummy types always looking for a handout.
Most of those people are not a problem but certainly can be if juiced up enough or high enough.
As a matter of fact the beggars got so bad at the particular fuel station/store I spoke of in this thread last year that I raised enough hell with the immigrant family owners and they finally ran them off.
This store is right outside my neighborhood and is one of the nicer ones in the area.
But the amount of traffic coming and going via vehicles also makes these places very attractive to those seeking to rob or carjack because most times they are right next to a freeway or major road.
We had a carjack killing less than a mile from my home at one of these Exxon fuel/stores recently.
The killer was caught and sent to Texas Death row just a couple of months ago.
He wanted the guys wheels bad enough to shoot him dead in the parking lot for them.

I always lock the keypad of my cell phone

Since so many "problems" occur at gas stations, I've found a way to avoid them almost entirely.

I fill up on a weekday morning on my way to work. Scumbags don't tend to get up and out early. For whatever reason, it seems most people think that waiting until after work on Friday or sometime on weekend evenings are THE time to fill up. I see cars lined up behind each other during those times, waiting to get to the pumps.

In my area the gas pumps are open for credit card transactions even if the station is closed/ Hard to get jumped if you're the only one in the station

Heeler,
This is why I and many others do not open carry. Based on what you wrote, you heading into the store is probably what saved you.

You know Tepin that may or may not be a distinct possibility.
Again, living all my life in northeast Houston, I know all to well a street thug from a generally well intentioned individual, except of course the exception of a truely cunning cameleon type actor.
All that being said I would have never ever allowed a guy like this inside my personal space, thus my comment earlier on that if the guy went for the cell phone holster, thinking quite wrongly he was grabbing my Verizon, I would be hanging on to the holster, fighting like hell mind you, until I could finally get the guy off of me and dealing with him in the manner appropriate at that moment.
Not sure I will ever open carry even if it is legal.
Frankly I like the stealth factor much, much more.
I made a comment about that prize catch by a thug of an open carry person in an earlier post in this thread.
That's an issue each person has to decide on and decide the actual consequences of that pro or con.
