receiver peep or tang sight for a marlin 39a? does anyone have experience with either?

If the tang sight does not lock up right perpendicular tp the barrel, you will get less light transmission throguh the peep, and thus a less useable sight picture.
I prefer a receiver mounted rear aperture, as it is generally more rugged, and doesn't need to be put into position to use.

I don't like tang sights at all, since they generally mount right where I like to grab the rifle, and put sharp metal right up against my hand. They do get the rear sight back closer to your eye though. Oh well, a receiver mount sight doesn't put the aperture any farther away than my M1 and M1A, which I consider to be the epitome of iron sights. I would definitely go with receiver mount.

I just put a "Williams" reciever peep sight on my Marlin 375(336) in the thread "peeped my marlin" with pics. I am diggin it! 2" groups @ 50 yards & 4" groups @ 100 yards.
It is awesome, I do load my own ammo, and I had to change the front sight also as the factory sight was too low( shot 9" high @ 100 yds).
I think they also make it for the model 39. I got it from midwayusa.com. never used a tangent.

I've got a Lyman tang sight on a Winchester 62. Love the sight, gets the rear sight right where I want it. The drawback is it means you have to adjust windage by drifting the front sight instead of it being click adjustable like most receiver sights are.

I've seen guys who were GOOD with them... usually a high/low wall in 'cowboy load' .45/70... but they're fiddly looking, awkwardly placed hobby contraptions, to my eye... i don't own a rifle with one, i wouldn't HUNT using one, and i've never met a hunter that does. then again, 20 years from now, i might discover to my horror that i have no meat in the freezer and $11,000 of single-shot .45/70 paper-punching and reloading gear to one-up all my recently retired buddies... funny how stuff creeps up on men that way.

I've got a skinner peep on my 39A. About the best I've done is about 1.5" groups at 40 yards over a makeshift bench. I need to do more research on a better bench to make a ruling yet.

There's several of us in the Model 39A Club (find that thread for some fine reading) who have the Skinner peep sight. In general, the sight is well thought of, delivering pretty good performance. There's a few reasons for the good reviews.
Peep sights will give you a longer distance between the front and rear sights. That's a good thing for accuracy. The peep sight geometry supports the Mark I Eyeball (M1E) better than tang sights. That's why you see loads of military rifles with peep sights and none with tang sights past the early days of WWI. The construction of the Skinner is all you'd want too.
In short, go to the Skinner for the peep sight.
