Is there an easy way to replace the rear sight of a marlin 1894 with a peep sight?

Is this something a non-gunsmith can do?

As an alternative, I would consider a tang mounted peep sight. Can that be done without a gunsmith?

If your Marlin is drilled and tapped for a scope mount installing a apeture sight is as easy as operating a flat screwdriver.

yes BUT only if you're cool with drilling holes in your rifle.

I put a williams -fp 336 on my 1894. Simple as using the rear scope mounting holes. However, I did have to put the hammer spur/extension on the rifle, and "modify" it a bit so that it would clear the aperture sight when the hammer falls. Simple as a few mins with a mill file and then some cold blue to fix the color. Best thing I ever did. The williams gives you the option of having a real aperture sight, then you can remove the aperture and use it as a ghost ring if you want to. Have the same sights on my 336.

Does the XS sight mount directly on the reciever in the scope mount holes?

Did you remove the buckhorn sight on the barrel?

Will the buckhorn sight be in the way of the peep (ie, will it be in the sight picture) if you leave it on?

Lone Gunman, yes the XS ghost ring installs on the receiver just as you guessed and is an easy install. You will want to remove the factory rear sight, and it won't be of much use anyway. You can also buy a blank filler to fill the dovetail -- Brownells has them. I use the Marbles version on my 336.

Get the Skinner

more precise than the XS, accepts williams aperatures, if you really need the ghost ring just remove the aperature. The Skinner is hand made too, if that means anything to you:cool:

I put a Skinner on my 1894C so I could get rid of the hammer spur that I had to install with the Wms site. I like the neatness of the Skinner sight, and the fact that I don't have a hammer spur, but unlike the Wms site, elevation isn't infinitly adjustable: the aperature is adjustable by turning it, so it's only adjustable in half-turn increments. I did the actual calculations at some point, but off the top of my head, I recall a half-turn increment translated to something in the area of 1" at 50yds. Also, it's lowest position is still a teeny bit high, so to get it right, I'd have to install a taller front sight.
