I am starting this thread to illustrate that when home invasions occur, calling 911/police won't help at that moment and home owners may need to defend their and their family's lives.

January 4, 2013 - http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/woman-hiding-kids-shoots-intruder/nTm7s/
A woman hiding in her attic with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday.

The incident happened at a home ... woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window ... she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family ... The woman then shot him five times ... woman ran to a neighbor's home with her children. The intruder attempted to flee in his car but crashed into a wooded area and collapsed in a nearby driveway ...

A man had to defend his home and life by shooting an intruder multiple times in the chest ... a 20-year-old man said he was at his home ... and a man tried breaking into his home ... intruder broke a window and was inside the home.

Officials said the man opened fire on the intruder, striking him multiple times in the torso. The intruder left the home and was found a block away from the home.

Sheriff's officials said this was the second time this man's home has been broken into in the last week.

David Lucas, 32, stole a car ... while driving ... saw a 69-year-old man working in his garage ... Lucas reportedly walked up to the homeowner and tried to rob him at knife point. But the victim managed to get to the .38-caliber handgun he had stashed in his garage.

The man shot Lucas once; then the two struggled briefly over the gun, police said. The homeowner regained control of the weapon and shot the suspect again. Bleeding from wounds to the arm and the buttocks, Lucas ran across the street and entered a neighbor's back yard, where officers found him.

Yes -- in metro Atlanta, a week does not go by without media reports of innocent civilians saving their own lives or the lives of other innocents with lawful use of firearms.

One man is dead and two more are behind bars after a World War II veteran took matters into his own hands when a burglar broke into his home.

Police say a man broke into the basement of a home ... just after 2 a.m. The homeowner, Earl Jones, 92, was awakened and grabbed his .22 caliber rifle. Thieves targeted Jones’ farm at least three times recently, stealing guns, money, even cattle.

When the intruder came through the door from the basement, Jones fired a single shot, police said. Jones immediately called his neighbor, who then called 911 ... Police say the wounded intruder was carried off by two other accomplices ... They got about a mile when they stopped ... to call 911. Police responded to the call they found a deceased male, along with Dalton and Inabnit ... Police said they admitted they were involved in the burglary on Violet Road.

Jones is a 92-year-old Air Force veteran who worked on planes, including the Enola Gay that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. He will not be charged.

The family locked themselves in the bedroom and the husband armed himself with a handgun. Billings then burst through the locked bedroom door and the homeowner fired his gun twice while on the phone with police

An attempted home invasion ends with a deadly shooting. The man who pulled the trigger is 73 years old. He was armed and ready after being targeted last week.

Detroit police tell us a man who was likely in his mid 30's is dead because he broke into a home on the city's west side. The homeowner says two men tried to break into his home on Sunday.

On Thursday, he heard a noise coming from downstairs. He knew something was not right, so he grabbed his gun to see what was going on and he encountered a stranger he believed was one of the men who tried to rob him before.

Police tell us the bad guy had kicked in the front door and walked in but the man of the house was right there and opened fire. One shot to the chest. The suspect ran out of the house and collapsed in the driveway of the home next door, where he died.

March 1, 2012 - http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865551247/Springville-homeowner-shoots-kills-intruder.html?pg=all
A Springville man Thursday shot and killed an intruder who police say woke up a sleeping couple in their bedroom and demanded they take him to an ATM for cash.

The intruder ... took the time to make a snack and change his clothes before waking and threatening the homeowners. Once inside the home, police said, Martinez found some clothes that had been left folded on the couch. He changed out of his wet clothes and into the homeowner's clothing. He also made himself a tortilla and ham wrap in the kitchen.

Martinez entered the master bedroom and threatened the couple sleeping there, saying he had a gun. He demanded that they retrieve their wallets and keys and drive him to an ATM ... The homeowner walked into a closet under the guise of getting ready to leave, Caron said. Instead, he took a 9 mm handgun from the closet and shot Martinez, striking him once in the chest. The homeowner and his wife were uninjured.

Court documents reveal an extensive criminal history for Martinez, including multiple jail sentences.

A couple had been sleeping when they woke up to the sound of glass breaking. The suspect had broken the rear sliding glass door, entered the house, and then started "trashing the house."

The couple, a 46-year-old man and his girlfriend, hid in a bedroom as they talked to the 911 operator. The couple told police that they could hear the suspect ransack the house. The suspect was yelling, "Where are you? I'm going to kill you!"

The man living at the home retrieved a handgun from his nightstand and yelled numerous times, "I have a pistol. Get out of my house!" The couple in the bedroom continued to hear the suspect ransack the house and yell that he was coming after them.

West said within a short time the suspect kicked the door down and at that point the homeowner fired several shots, killing the suspect.

The home invasion appeared to be random, and the homeowners said they did not know the attacker.

The homeowners, Bob Lohman, 64, and his wife, Charlene Lohman, 57, were in the downstairs living room, watching television. Bob ... saw a man looking through the doors at them. He got up to investigate, and a landscaping block flew through one of the windows on the doors, and then the doors flew open.

Carlton came into the house, grabbed Charlene Lohman, dragged her to the floor, and began beating her. Lohman tried to get Carlton off his wife, but couldn't. So Bob Lohman went upstairs and grabbed a .38 caliber revolver, went downstairs and warned Carlton several times to get off his wife. But Carlton didn't, so Lohman shot him once in the upper torso. He then pulled Carlton off his wife and called police.

Dallas police said the woman was home alone when she heard a noise -- two men had kicked in the front door of her house. She confronted the two men as they reached the second-floor landing and shot at them several times, police said.

Investigators said a gun recovered at the home indicates that at least one of the intruders was armed.

Charles Brown, the father of the 22-year-old woman who fired the shots, said he is proud of his daughter. "Yeah, it is -- it's puffed out because I'm real proud of her because I taught her that," he said. "I taught my girls that -- to defend themselves when someone come to hurt them, and apparently she listened."

Brown said their home has been broken into once before.

"I'm feeling real disgusted about this neighborhood at this moment, that a man can't go to work and make an honest day's living without some thug breaking into his house," he said. Because his daughter works at night and sleeps during the day, he left the gun by her pillow, just like he does every day, Brown said.

Thank you. Sadly, home owners being victimized and killed by intruders far outnumber the incidents where home owners successfully defend their lives.

After much contemplation of recent events, I thought it was constructive to illustrate the need for self-defense by home owners and CCW.

two men kicked in the door of a Creel Road home at about 1 a.m. and began firing weapons and demanded money from a 24-year-old son living there.

The man’s father heard the noise and came in with his own gun, shooting and killing one of the men, police said.

“It could have gotten a lot worse. Some of the homeowners, as well as the mother and the son, could have been injured, however, thankfully, in this scenario the homeowner was able to wound the perpetrator,” said Kay Lester of the Fulton County Police Department.

A retired Puyallup police officer shot and killed a man who was attempting to break into his home Wednesday afternoon.

a man who lives at a home ... was sleeping when people tried to break in. The owner grabbed his gun and fired, hitting one of the intruders. The group then fled ... the injured man was dropped off at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, where he later died.

After searching the parking lot, deputies found a man and woman, who were taken into custody for questioning ... Investigators also found a truck and what appeared to be stolen items from other burglaries, according to investigators.

"Those things are happening more and more in this economy. It's sad," said neighbor Matt Klein.

Just last Friday, a North Bend homeowner shot and killed a man who broke into his house. The King County Sheriff's Office said in that case the homeowner showed "great restraint" and determined the shooting to be "justified."

a 46-year-old man and his girlfriend were woken up by the sound of glass breaking. The intruder broke a sliding glass door to enter their home ... the couple hid locked themselves in a bedroom and spoke with a 911 operator, the intruder continued to threaten them. According to West, the intruder was yelling, "Where are you at? I'm going to kill you."

The man who lived inside of the home retrieved his handgun, according to officials. He told the intruder he had a gun and to get out of his house. After the intruder kept threatening the homeowner, he knocked the bedroom door down, and the homeowner fired at the intruder, said West. When deputies arrived at the scene they found the intruder’s body outside of the bedroom.

West said the incident was a clear case of self-defense. "The resident showed quite a bit of restraint. He continued to yell at the suspect to leave the house and said he was armed. The couple even locked themselves in a room to try to avoid a confrontation. They had no way of knowing if the suspect was armed. The resident was clearly forced to shoot to defend himself and his girlfriend."

“It’s your worst nightmare,” said Eric Nelsen, who lived close to the house. “Some totally random person coming in your house and attacking you.” According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was not known to the couple living at the home or to the woman at the home on Southeast 5th Avenue.

The homeowner said he was home when two men came to his front door and knocked. Since he did not recognize them, he didn't answer, he said. A short time later, one of the men knocked on the back door before kicking it in, investigators said.

The homeowner said he grabbed his deer rifle and ordered the burglar to stop. The man then turned around with a pistol in his hand, the homeowner said, so the homeowner fired once. The burglar died at the scene.

"The other man had a gun. He didn't have any choice. It was him or the other guy. (It) still doesn't make it any easier on him," said Randy Charlton, the homeowner's friend.

The second man drove off but was apprehended an hour later because the homeowner wrote down the vehicle's license plate number, police said. Investigators said the second man crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Kirby Drive and the South Loop.

It all began, detectives said, when the burglar tried unsuccessfully breaking into a neighbor's house. A man next door heard commotion and looked out his window to see what was going on and called 911. That's when detectives said the burglar smashed some flower pots then smashed his way through a front window ... and crawled in.

The homeowner can be heard on the 911 call telling the burglar to leave and get out of his house or he'll "blow his head off." The suspect wouldn't listen and instead began rummaging through a drawer and grabbed a knife, police said. Fearing for his life, the homeowner grabbed a gun and shot the suspect once in the torso.

The 25 year old homeowner was not injured and will not be charged because he was protecting himself and his home police said

Police say the homeowner heard a noise in his attached garage and then heard his car alarm go off. After hearing the strange sounds, the homeowner armed himself with a gun and went to investigate. Once the homeowner was in his garage, he saw an intruder and opened fire. After firing at the suspect, the homeowner ran back into the house and called the cops.

Once on scene, officers found the suspect, identified as Robin Smith, lying in the driveway next to the damaged garage door wearing a shoulder holster with a handgun in it. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

After further investigation, a second suspect, 16-years-old, was located and placed under arrest.

Police say a Licking County homeowner shot and killed an intruder who allegedly tried to use his own gun against him.

According to investigators, the homeowner who is paraplegic and in a wheelchair, awoke early Sunday morning after an intruder poked him to wake up using his own shotgun. The intruder had found the weapon in the house.

But the homeowner had a second gun that investigators said he concealed in his "bed clothes," which the homeowner was able to obtain. He distracted the intruder and used the second gun to fatally shoot the intruder, police said.

There was a brief altercation, and that's when the man inside the apartment pulled out a gun and opened fire on the intruder, killing him.

August 31, 2012 - http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/local/marion_county/homeowner-shoots-burglar
The homeowner, Wallace Turner, told police he, his wife and 5-year-old daughter were sleeping around 1:45 a.m., when the intruder kicked in the back door.

Turner said he grabbed his handgun and ran down the hall to confront the burglar who was standing in his living room. Turner said, "He wasn't getting past me. My wife and daughter were behind me." At that point, Turner said, the burglar lunged at him; Turner fired the gun twice, striking the burglar in the leg.

The burglar, he said, ran out of the house but collapsed on the the back porch. Turner held the wounded burglar at gunpoint while his wife called 9-1-1. Turner told 24-Hour News 8 the burglar repeatedly said "sorry" as they waited for police. Wallace said his only response was "don't move."

Police are looking into a possible connection to two other homes in the neighborhood that were also broken into.
