I am wanting to get a .300 wsm or a .300 win mag, but don't want to fork out the $ for a new gun. I have a Savage 110 .30-06 that I do not use and a Howa 1500 .243 with a fluted bull barrel. I was thinking that the .243 could be rehcambered to the .300 wsm since they are both short actions. Or could the savage be rechambered to the .300 win and the action hold up to the shock of a magnum? Any thoughts? And any idea how much it costs to rechamber a barrel?

Both rifles mentioned use a 30-06 size bolt face. The .300 Whizz'm case head is basically the same as a belted Magnum. To big to fit.

Either of the actions are the same strength as the Magnum actions.

But re-boring and re-chambering a .243 to .30 would be cost prohibitive. You can just buy a new barrel for the Savage cheaper.

Still, converting rifles to different calibers, and case sizes in particular, is fraught with problems.
Will it feed? No, probably not.
Will it eject? Probably with some action work.

If you are paying a gunsmith for all the conversion work & fiddling, you would be way money ahead to just trade them off for what you DO want.

I fully agree. All the talk about rechambering and reboring is fun, but when push comes to shove and dollars are on the line it just makes more sense to trade what you don't want and buy what you do.

Thanks for the info. That has been at the back of my mind, just buy a new gun instead of having to worry about those things. Guess I will look into buying a new gun.
