Well I ordered 115 grain Gold Dots and recieved 147 grain bullets instead. I only have HP-38 powder and was planning on using 5.1 grains for the 115 grain Gold Dots. Anyone have recipes for the 147 grain Gold Dots with HP-38 or the Winchester equivalent? I was thinking 4.8 grains of HP-38 but I am unsure of myself due to the lack of data.

my '96 Hogdon data book doesn't list a hp-38 load for the 147gr 9mm Para.
does list 3,8 gr for a 147gr jhp in a .38 spcl at 856 fps/15,000 cup from a 7"" bbl well in 9Para pressure.
so likely would do well but you'll have to 'work up' a load.
I use Power Pistol in 9mm.

I just checked my copy of the current Speer #14 manual and it doesn't list HP38 with any 147 gr bullet. I believe that powder is a tad too fast for that bullet.

Well I guess I need to buy some powder then, any suggestions? It would be great if I could find a powder to load 115 grain 9mm and 230 grain 45 ACP as well. As HP-38 is great for doing both the 115 grain and 230 grain bullets.

Just answered my own question looks like Universal or Titegroup will do. I have never used either powder which one is cleaner?

I don't know why they have chickened out.
Hodgdon no 26, 1992, showed maximum 9mm loads of a 147 gr jacketed bullet and 4.5 grains of HP38 or 4.3 grains of W231. I load 3.5-3.7 depending on the gun.

Got an OAL?

Way to go Lyman! Thanks ArchAngel.

I went digging around through my data (which I shoulda done first but I was lazy) and found the following powders will work with the 115 grain and 147 grain 9mm loads, and 230 grain 45 acp loads. IMR 800x and Accurate No 7. I have never used IMR does it burn clean? And is it sperical or flake?

IMR 800X and AA#7 will work in the 9mm but IMO they are too slow for use in the low pressure .45 Auto. AA#5 on the other hand is a great powder for the .45 Auto. I never used IMR800X so I can't comment on that one.

I use W231 and Longshot for my 9mm loading. I use W231 and AA#5 for my .45 Auto loading. W231 and AA#5 can be used for both and will do a good job in both. (W231 for lighter loads, AA#5 for "hotter" loads)

Well, until I recieved these 147 grain Gold Dots I have used HP-38 for 9mm and 45 ACP as of late. Last year I used Accurate #7 for 45 ACP for both 200 grain and 230 grain plated bullets which I always use for my 45 target reloads. I noticed how clean the HP 38 was in my 9mm and how dirty the #7 was in the 45 so I have now used HP 38 exclusively.

Nothing, I just for some reason between my Lee manuals and Hodgon data books didn't seem to have data for the 147 grain. I will try your recipe out Friday starting with 3.5 grains and a 1.12 OAL.

Well its not on my list of acceptable Powders with my current data but all I could find locally was Ramshot Shilouette. I looked at the Ramshot manual and it looks like it will do 9mm 115, and 147 grain along with 230 grain 45 ACP.

Between Alliant, Winchester and loaddata.com online load data and 6 printed manuals I have 9 "books". None of them list everything or every combination. I sure would like to find a single source that showed all possible combinations.

WST and other Winchester powders are harder to find for a lot of combos. Some older manuals show a lot more Bullseye loads then the newer manuals do. Oh well.

Just fired some tests rounds with the "Shilouette" powder by ramshot. I used 4.2 grains and 1.65 OAL with a 147 grain Gold Dot in the 9mm. It worked well, but seemed under powered the max load for this combo is 4.4 so maybe I should max out on it.

Bullet box insert from an old box of 147 Gold-Dots indicate Max loads as follows.
Seated 1.115" OAL.
W-W cases, CCI 500 primers
Beretta 92 4.9" barrel.

Reduce 10% for starting load.
AA #7 - 6.9 = 997 FPS
Blue Dot - 6.5 = 1,010
HS-6 - 5.7 = 957
AA #5 - 4.9 = 979
Herco - 4.9 = 950
Unique - 4.5 = 967
473AA - 4.3 = 910
WW231 - 4.1 = 932
452AA - 4.1 = 918
HP38 - 4.0 = 918
Bullseye - 3.9 = 922
700-X - 3.6 = 931
Red Dot - 3.5 = 891
