I reacently purchased a 7.5" Ruger Super Blackhawk on from another member on this board. I have loaded up my first 100 rounds for .44 Mag and I have come to the realization this thing is probably going to be a hoss of a revolver. It does have large Uncle Mikes rubber grips, however I don't know how much that will help. I've never shot a .44 mag before so I really don't know what to expect. I have a starting load of

240gr Hornady XTP
23gr WW296
Win Brass
Fed 155 Primer

I have right now on loan from a friend an 8 3/8's 500 S&W with some pretty hot 350gr bullets behind 42gr of Lil-gun. This thing seems to be a stout kicker. I can stack rounds off hand with it, but it hurts my hand pretty badly due to hand surgery I had a couple years ago (2 pins).

In your best opinion would you think the kick would be comparable to the .500 or any lighter?

No comparison. After I bought and started shooting a .500 S&W my .44 mag faded into insignificance. Now, if you want a .44 mag kicker, try the S&W 329PD lightweight .44! That's at least as bad as the .500.

The recoil of a .44 mag or .500 mag is pretty impressive when approaching full loads. Each can be loaded down with much milder loads. I like H4227 for less than full power loads. For really mild loads I like Universal Clays. For really wimpy CAS type loads, I use Titegroup. Look on the Hogdgen website for load recommendations. Just don't use 296 for light loads. It must be loaded to nearly full power, or you risk things like hangfires.

The .44 isn't bad in a steel framed revolver. If you can handle ANY .500 load, the .44 will be a cakewalk.

Well, you guys were right!

I went out and shot 80 rounds today of some pretty hot rounds. It certianly made my hot loaded 357 feel like a .22 but the recoil of the .44 was nothing to go crazy about, at least in this platform.

I purchased this pistol with an Uncle Mikes set of rubber grips and they tore my hands up pretty good. I think I am going to invest in a good set of rosewood grips. I think they would really "tie the gun together".

The .500 certianly kicks MUCH harder than the .44. Thanks for the answers guys.

500 MAG

Hi guys I just bought some 700 GRs from ballistic supply & I'm going to the gun club today 4/23/06 to have some fun, they have to be a KICKER:D first time shooting the 700 GRs

skag7, I reload them 700 gr. bullets, you better hold on. I get my bullets from Ranger Rick and it cost me a lot less to reload them than buy them already loaded. Big thumpers. :what:

I fear you have truly gone into the realm of crew-served artillery.:what:
