Recoil pad installation?

Well, I bought a Pachmayr pre-fit recoil pad for my 870 wood stock shotgun and it fits pretty well. However, it does have some high spots on it I would like to smooth down to fit the wood a little better. What is the best method for that? Thanks...

Lay a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper on a large piece of glass and draw the butt stock across it in one direction only. Do the same with the recoil pad. Trying the fit often,you should get a perfect match.

Are we talking about a gap between the pad and the end of the stock?

Or it sticks out past the side of the stock in a few places.

If the first, do as jimmyraythomason said with a flat plate and sandpaper.

If it is the latter, tape of the stock with masking tape, and use a fine-cut file to cut the pad down even with the stock.
Stop filing just as it starts to cut through the tape.
