Picked up the Remington Super Cell recoil pad for my 700 BDL. On the packaging it specifically says for Rem 700 ADL/BDL with wood stocks. Got it home, unscrewed the two screws in the butt end of the stock, open up the recoil pad, and its no where near close to the same size as the stock. Just the middle part of the hard plastic butt end came out, there are 2 more screws which I figured released the outer ring of hard black plastic. I took those out, but it also appears to be held on by glue or epoxy since it would not budge.

Is the supercell supposed to fit inside the "outer ring" or completely over it? I've searched on line with no sucess to even find a picture of a Rem 700 BDL with one of these supercell recoil pads installed to compare. The pad is not long enough to go from the top to the bottom of the stock. I had to get out the door pretty quick for work, so i couldnt take any measurements. I plan to look at it some more when I get home tonight.

the pictures of all other recoil pads i've found make it look like the pad is the same size as the end of the stock and this simply isnt the case. I bought my 700 brand new in December so it is not an older one as I have read these pads do not fit the older models. I really hope I'm missing something, because you would think Remington would be able to make a pad to fit their own rifle especially since they market it directly for a 700 ADL/BDL wood stock which I have. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Recoil Pad Installation

Everything has to be removed from the stock, then see how your pad fits. If it's larger than the stock it will have to be ground, or sanded to the buttstock shape. The buttstock may even be curved, if so it needs to be sanded flat. You can do this if you are handy with tools. Put some tape on the stock to protect the finish, then sand the recoil pad down until it is flush with the tape. I use a heavy plastic bedding tape for this and it works well. If you have a belt or disc sander that will do the job. If the pad is too small get you a Hi-Viz pad (brownells.com) and grind it down to fit, they also stock the tape I use. The Hi-Viz pads grind better than anything I've used and are really soft and not effected by gun solvents like others are. Good Luck. Al

Thanks Al,

It appears I might have to return this one. Unless I totally rehape my stock to be over 1" shorter (top to bottom) this pad wont work. Seems stupid for them to put on the package that it fits this exact rifle, only for the pad to be over 1" shorter than the end of the stock ... oh well, live and learn i guess

To maintain the origanal pull length you will have to shorten the stock, Unless you need a longer pull length. If it's to long take a stiff-back miter saw an you can cut it pretty straight, then sand it down. Wrap sone masking tape around the buttstock 2 layers and draw you a line around the stock where it needs cutting then cut short of the line and sand to the line for a finished length. Don't get the wood to hot sanding on a power sander it willl cause the finish to crinkle up. Maybe take it to a local smith if this sounds to complicated. Don't forgrt about the Hi-Viz pad.
