I have a lot of rifles and although I have a place to shoot them, I don't shoot them nearly as often as I would like. Lately, I've noticed on a few of them, that when I do take them out to shoot them they have some problems related to being stored. I always clean them with Hoppes #9 and Rem-oil before putting them away.

The problems are almost always the same. A gummy varnish is binding up the firing pin causing light or no strikes and sometimes in the chamber as well, making extraction difficult.

My question is this: Is there some product that I can use to clean these guns and have them protected but yet be able to take them out and shoot them without having to clean them first? I know If I cleaned them before I shot them I would not be seeing these problems but I'm just wondering if there is an easier way. The problems I have seen are on guns they may not have been shot in a year or two.

Maybe I'm using too much oil or doing something else wrong. I'm open to all suggestions? Thanks in advance for any input.

Eezox is what I like. Especially because you can use it for both solvent, lube, and rust prevention.

I'm not 100% sold on the lubrication part of it, and I still use grease where grease is needed, but it works great for storage.

If you're not having any problems with dots of rust due to humidity, it sounds as though your only real problem is inside the bolts.

I'd suggest a one-time dis-assembly and cleaning with something like starting fluid or a brake cleaner. Then, a light oiling inside the bolt, the firing pin and the spring. After that, I wouldn't do further lubing of the bolt beyond an occasional wipe-down with the RemOil.

My experience with RemOil for long term is similar, and I don't use it anymore for firearms and am just finishing off the can on the rams of my presses. BreakFree has been my choice for the past few years with good results. With any oil, it should be used sparingly on the inside of your bolt.

Use LPS2 or Breakfree on the bore after cleaning. They are a fine rust preventative and dry after application so you don't have to clean oil residue before you shoot. I have been using both for many years, I swear they are the same, with never a problem. They are my wipedown product also. Some of my guns have been in storage, aka safe, for close to 20 years with zero rust problems....chris3

I've been through a fair amount of schooling on the effectiveness of VCI materials in it's various formats.

The military is a big user of VCI technology.

My guns are all stored in my safe in the garage in a relatively high humidity area (DFW) and each gun is kept in a VCI bag.have NEVER seen ANY trace of corrosion....none.

I simply wipe down the bluing with a light coat of oil (Hoppes), place the gun in the VCI bag, put it in the safe that has 2 of the rechargeable dehumidifiers and that's it.

No mess, no added time for applying coating then removing, it's clean, it's easy and it WORKS very well. The one's I use are 6 mil. thick, so they also keep guns from scratching each other in the safe.

Most supply vendors will have these (most of mine come through Cheaper Than Dirt, but Brownells and Midway will also have them).

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I am anxious to try some of these products and hopefully be done with the problems I have been experiencing. I'll let you know.

Thanks again!
