Ok, I have an extra $300 to play with and there's a gunshow here this weekend. I'm thinking revolver possibly a used .357. I have a Glock 17, Glock 19 (wifes), Springfield XD 9 Tactical, Hi-Point 9mm Carbine (on order due in Monday) and a 1891 Argentine Mauser (7.65 Arg). I'm thinking a revolver would be a nice addition, besides I miss shooting a Colt Detective Special .38 snubbie that my father had when I was younger. Any recomendations on a under $300 revolver (used is OK)?

I would look for a S&W model 10 heavy barrel. You should be able to find a 4" under $300 (I bought one at a show in may for $250) they have great actions and are better balanced than their standard barreled brothers although one of those would be nice too. Police departments issued them in droves so they are plentiful and usually inexpensive. The fixed sights are wide for fast target aquision there is little drag so they are good for ccw.

Adam5, Welcome to THR. Right now I think the older S&W revolvers are the best buys on the market. In a 357 Magnum the Models 19, 65, and 66 are great guns and should be right around $300, maybe a bit more. If you're interested in a dedicated .38 Special the models 10, 15, 64, and 67 are great revolvers, usually found from $175 to $250-ish. Those are all K Frames, which is S&Ws mid sized platform. Many folks here (myself included) find the K frames to best some of the best balanced and handling revolvers out there. I'm not sure on current Ruger prices, but the SP-101 and GP-100 are also good wheel guns to look at. Hopefully that provides a good start for you.

hey checkout the gun show if you see something good grab it if not go to bull's eye gun shop in lawrenceville they always have good used revolvers for 300 or less

Adam5 may I suggest

one thing. This suggestion is based on my own past practices and regrets. If I have, say $300 extra, and promise myself a new gun, or whatever, I will set out to spend that money and often buy too hastily just because I have the dollars to buy something. So, may I suggest taking it slowly on buying something. Get some reference books on guns and look through for what you are interested in. Do a little research on what the members here suggest. Develop, in your mind, one or two or three different models that appeal to you and then go checking the shops and shows. Do NOT buy the first thing you see unless you have spent some quality time researching and know what your target item is (no pun intended). When you find one of the models your interested in pick it up and try it out as much as possible and talk with the seller about it and other gun people. I think that if you do this, and make a seriously considered purchase, you will have a much better chance of making a purchase that you not regret. And, also I agree with a lot of opinions about a SW, or perhaps, Colt 38 special or the like.

$300.00 Revolver

Think Ruger. Luck out and find a Security Six .357 mag. Next best luck a GP-100 .357 mag.

Another Ruger vote

Their Security/Service Six models are downright cheap and great shooters.

If you are patient and look hard, you should be able to find a S&W Model 14 in that range. Can't go wrong. I would suggest a 14-no dash through around a 14-4.

Well.... The gun show didn't go too well. Nothing interesting, mostly new or collectable. But, after I went to a nearby dealer (where my wife bought her XD9 last year)that has a large selection of used guns. I found a used Ruger Security Six .357 in blue, great condition for $250. I picked it up along with a box of Blazer .38 spc, and a box of Blazer .357 mag for $285 out the door. I can't wait to go to the range tomorrow and try it out. I'll post a range report and pics soon !!!

Thanks for the advice and reccomendations,

Adam

Good pick, Security Sixes are really nice and strong guns. If it is your first revolver I would recommend replacing the factory grips (if they came with the gun) with rubber grips. It will make it a lot more comfortable to shoot.
Don't forget to do a quick cleanup of the chambers after shooting 38's if switching to 357's.
Now, some pics would be nice...

I haven't seen a used revolver in this state for under $300.00 in years. God I miss the free world.
