I have never tried handloading but recently acquired a Mauser 3000 in 243. The barrel is 22" long, but I have no idea what the twist is. Does anyone have any recommendations what bullet/powder combination would work best? I have heard that 243 can be used for moose with the right bullet. However, I plan to use it for mostly deer and targets. Thanks.

You need to establish a twist rate. It is pretty easy to do. Then look consider the best bullet for your job. I used a 100 grain hornady interlock. Number 2450. I used it effectively on deer. Very accurate indeed in my rifle.

First off I would NOT recommend a 243 for moose class game under any circumstances, big deer and medium hogs is their practical limit even with premo bullets. If you are hunting small-medium deer 85gr SGKs have a strong following as do 100gr core-lokts and interlocks. If you want to push the upper limits of the 243 on very large deer/small elk game the 100gr Partition and 85gr TSX are in a class of their own. I have seen a ballistics gel test where both the Partition and TSX penetrated 30+ inches, no standard cup and core comes close.
