My girlfriend wants a side-by-side double barreled shotgun, with external hammers, because she thinks they are cool. (I believe she was inspired by a climactic scene from 'Legends of the Fall' where Anthony Hopkins uses one, despite a disabling stroke, to defend his family.)

We're on kind of a budget, but I want something of decent quality. What should I look for?

Not many external hammer coachgun options. Under $400 models include the Remington Spartan, EMF, Cimmaron, and Interstate. The Remington, which is made in Russia, was recently discontinued. The EMF and Cimmaron versions are actually the same gun and made in China. The Interstate, which is the least expensive, is also made in China by Norinco.

She's right. They are cool.
There are lots of low-cost coach guns out there. But, consider a black powder shotgun! That ups the cool factor for sure. Dixie Gun Works has a great website, and reasonable shipping prices (and they are wonderful, decent folks).

SxS 12 or 20 gauges for $230 + shipping and FFL transfer fees. I just ordered one. The representative said they are made by a Chinese company and they've sold them for years and she thinks they are good quality. For under $300 as long as it's not junk and it works I'll be happy. Effective buckshot range is probably 50 yards. A very good home defense longgun. I'd still chose a pump shotgun instead, but I would not feed undergunned with this.

CZ makes a beautiful one - buy it for her if she becomes your wife,

I love coach guns - going order the CZ next month after the holiday bills are paid

Does she want it as a toy, or for self-defense?

Both. She is of the opinion that they look cool and old timey, and that perhaps having fewer moving parts than pumps or semiautos mmeans they'll be more durable and easier to use under stress. I don't know if she's right or not, but it's what she wants so...
Aesthetics are important, but so is utility and price.

My Stoeger Coach Gun was only about $300 at Dick's earlier this year. It's a boxlock but it may be worth a look if the price is right for you. The only complaint I have is the automatic safety that engages every time you move the latch.

There are ways to have that changed by a good gunsmith to manual or totally disabled

sounds like a bad idea to me I like that about doubles you always know the state of things are safe until you decide to make it not
