I'm looking to get my carry permit and I'm not sure where to start. Everyone here offers a CHL class...there will surely be better instructors/courses than others. Some will also be cheaper than others.

I've seen some courses advertised for $65 at gun shows, and I've also seen classes advertised for $140ish.

Can anyone recommend a well-taught course with a reasonable price in the DFW area?

Are you looking for a CHL prep. course? Or are you looking for a basic pistol type course? If you are looking for the latter, try the DFW Gun Club on Mockingbird. As far as a prep. course, that is not required as the CHL class itself pretty much teaches you all you need to know. Except of course, how to shoot and basic pistol safety. A friend of mine took his CHL test somewhere in Grand Prairie and said he had no problems whatsoever. That may be the place ball3006 is linking to.

I've heard that Targetmaster in Dallas is good as well as The Bullet Trap in Plano. If you are in the Terrell area, try Terrell PD, as I believe they teach the CHL there.

Are you already a "shooter"? For instance can you keep all shots within about 12-14 inches out to 15 yards?
If so you will max the shooting qualification.

Most people have already passed when they finish the 3 and 7 yard shooting.
You can easily get 200 points at 3 and 7 yards and only 175 are required to pass.
I tell shooters the 10 shots at 15 yards is just for your ego.

For anyone that can shoot, the qualification is child's play.
I passed with my eyes closed (for practice).

A senior lady I recently taught to shoot went for her CHL last month.
I told her I would accept nothing less than 250.
She shot 250 besting the other shooters, 8 men and a woman.:)

The classroom instruction is long and comes at you fast but it is interesting with a good instructor.

Check with your range, they usually have a list and can give you some recommendations. Mine was really good and thought by my gun store in Denton. If you live near Keller check at ShootSmart. They specialize in training and getting new shooters started right.

I think I'm looking for the prep course...whatever will give me the necessary paperwork

Yes; I've been shooting pistol for years but have just recently acquired the mindset and have accepted the responsibility of conceal carry. I have no doubts in my shooting abilities.

Thanks for the recommendations...I'll have to look into them.

I do have a question about the whole process though....so I know I have to complete a CHL class, I have to submit an application to the state, and I have to get my fingerprints taken.

In what order can those 3 things happen (If I have the requirements correct)? Can I get my application into the state and processing before I even take the CHL class? Once my application is processing with the state, can I then get my fingerprints complete? Can this also happen before my class?

I want to get the ball rolling on this so I have the least amount of wait time.

Pre paperwork/application is best to do online - just go to the Texas DPS website and look for CHL links

Yes prints are done before class, as well as the application and sending money into the state. I did my app. online, simple and easy. They, DPS, emailed a fingerprint conformation/processing page for me to take to the print guys. PM me and I'll pass on what I've got in a more uniform fashion.

And if you have a DD-214, a copy of that will also need to be sent in.

Below is what I sent to Joe

Yes, Most everything can be done pre class and online. There will be a link to the CHL application below. Just scroll down and hit "APPLY". That'll get it started. Just follow the instructions and you'll be done with that part in no time. Download the following .pdf files from the DPS website - CHL-6 and CHL-16. The -6 is a photo holder/ID signature paper, and the -16 is all you need as far a textbook. I printed off both and took them to class with me. The instructor(s) don't always have enough books for all in the class, and the -6 needs to be sent to Austin. Just can't remember if I needed to send it, or the instructor did. And like I said in the thread, after completing the online app. they'll send you (I think) steps for the fingerprint process.

The DD-214 is the discharge paperwork and verification of military service.

Hope this all helps, and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll do what I can to help.

When you get your package from DPS, the book is in it. I have renewed 4 times and the need for a DD214 never came up. When did that change? chris3

Just make sure you get the full 10 hours of instruction and range time. There is currently a problem with some TX instructors giving shorter classes than mandated by law. If DPS finds out the instructor has been "cheating" on time, they will revoke the instructor's certification and invalidate the licenses of the students he/she passed.
