Recommend Me a .22lr Handgun

I'm really liking that Taurus 94! Now if I could just find one for around the $300 mark, I'm not wanting to go much more than that. (I know, I know I'm a cheap ass :neener:) And also the Walther P22, does anybody have a little more insight on those? It seems everybody has had good luck with the Buckmark too, you think its possible to find one of those ~$300? BTW beautiful MKIII :)

Right now I have a Ruger single six , centennial model, w/22lr & 22 mag cylinders. I'd look for a used Ruger or S&W.

Walther P22 has a great deal of reviews here, I can tell you that I wouldn't use it for small game, while I would use my Ruger mkIII without hesitation if a rifle wasn't an option.

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend the Beretta Neos. I have one and it's a great little pistol. It's accurate, it's reliable and it's easy to disassemble.

I put a red dot on mine and it's always my girlfriend's and daughter's favorite to shoot and I take it rabbit hunting.

The P-22 is a good, inexpensive plinker but that's about it. Mine has been dead reliable with everything I've fed it but it ain't accurate enough for fine work like small game hunting. The Ruger MK-series, Browning Buckmark and the various S&W autos are all much better suited to general purpose work. As for which, handle them all and decide which you like best. Until the 22/45 with replaceable 1911 grip panels came out, there wasn't a Ruger auto I could live with. Preferred Buckmarks for the most part but the S&W 2206TGT is one I've always wanted to have.

A Ruger Old Model Single Six has been my favorite for years and it gets the most usage. The Bearcat is quickly becoming a favorite too. An older blued 6" K-22 was my first double action and it's still a fun shooter/hunter/plinker. Excellent general purpose rimfire. As is its 4" model 18 brother.

Lots of choices and nobody can pick your .22 for you.

A Ruger single six with an extra 22 Mag cylinder is a great value IMHO. It makes your gun more versatile.

I would love a Ruger Single Six Hunter with one chamber reamed to 22mag. Put on a 2x scope in the provided rings and it would be great out to a full 50+ yards.

BUT my real recommendation is a Colt Woodsman, the name speaks for itself. I have a 1st series with the High speed mainspring. It is a great gun, I just cannot use it here in PA because of a restriction on using autoloaders for hunting.

Another vote for the Browning Buckmark. I shoot my Buckmark more than all of my other guns combined. It would make a great trail gun and a is perfect for plinking.

I did it! Went with what I never thought I'd get, a single action revolver, let alone in .22! ;) Got the Ruger Single Six with both .22LR and .22 mag cylindars. So far I love it, very accurate, and very pleased with my purchase. I am curious however, do any of you guys know how/where I could look up the manufacture date of it? The serial number is 63-65XXX. Thanks a lot for the input folks! :)

Congratulations. The Ruger Single Six is a nice handgun, as are all Rugers. I own four Ruger Bearcats in .22 caliber and enjoy them greatly. You've purchased a quality firearm that will last you a lifetime.

Browning Buckmark.

Fun, accurate, reliable, more fun, more accurate, more reliable.

Just a great gun all around.

The Single Six is a great choice too. I just really like to be able to shoot 10 consecutive shots, pop in a new mag and shoot another 10 consecutive shots.

Almost no need to post now. You got my number one choice, a Rugar Single Six 22 with both cylinders. Next would have been a Rugar Mk I II or III or a Buckmark--whichever "feels best in hand".

My OTHER Recommendation is to get a FULL FLAP Holster. If you trail ride it will offer far better protection. I've packbacked ("cross country", not sidewalk--wide trails) 30 years with a SSix and it looks as good as new. I prefer Crossdraw weakside holsters. Ordinarily I'd want it with a SLIGHT forward cant to Vertical, but on a bike is a case where a 30+ degree forward cant might be very comforable and "out of the way" riding.
Some kinda "pouch", like a speedloader holder for a LARGE cyclinder revolver (N frame S&W) would hold the spare cylinder. I'd put the Mag in it and you'd be prepared for anything up to a coyote.

If you really want a 22lr, I would go for the wheel gun (s&w 617 with 10rounds fi), because .22 auto's are either to fragile or to much ammo sensitive for trail use IMHO. (I own an Hammerli and a mosquito in 22 and a USP in 9mm and in 45acp).

If you want a auto for trail use I would go for a service type pistol (build for reliability). U can find surplus police pistols in small calibers (380, 7.65, ...)

greetings

peter

sorry, just noticed you decided, great choice, have fun

All good suggestions so far. I'd like to put in a plug for the Beretta U22 Neos. Granted, the design is a bit funky, but they are reasonably priced and shoot well. Also, they come with two mags. I've enjoyed mine very much.
