Recommendations for .22lr revolvers

QUOTE: "...And for those who own the 6" barrel, good luck trying to hold one on target..."

Us Bullseye shooters do it all the time. With one hand.

Let me say a few things about .22 revolvers that usually are not heard. I hear a lot about the S&W 617. I have owned 3 of these and passed them on to people who HAD to have 10 rounds. The reality of revolver physics is that the correct number of rounds (on a full sized revolver) is 6. Not 7 (S&W also made these) and definitely not 10. And for those who own the 6" barrel, good luck trying to hold one on target.
Not sure what you're trying to say there on the "...good luck trying to hold one on target" part, but if you're saying that it's difficult to be accurate with them, I have never heard that one before, and certainly never experienced it in my 30+ years of shooting 6" revolvers. I have no issues holding my 6" K-22 on target, nor my 6" 686, or 6" Trooper Mk III. And neither does my wife, nor did several other half-decent shooters who have tried out these guns.

I do prefer 6-shot revolvers, but wasn't aware of the drawbacks you mention for the 10 rounders (perhaps because I've never owned one).

Where did you come up with this bit of "reality"? I'd be interested in seeing the evidence for the claim.

I have a k22 model 17-8 ten shot with six inch barrel that is my favorite hand gun. I think the 617 is next generation so can't be bad. Rutgers sp or gp are solid too but the sp101 is not as heavy. Get what feels best in your hand. They will probably all preform well.

I also agree with getting a Model 17 or an earlier K-22. My model 17-3 is a beautiful revolver. Even though I paid nearly $700 for a used 1968 or so revolver, I enjoy shooting it so much, the price was worth it.

It so happens that my favorite .22 revolvers do hold six, but I've owned 9 & 10 round ones also, and I too am curious, Wireman: Why 6? Defend that statement, and include any gunsmithing, gun design/engineering, and metallurgy background you have that supports this. (Dang, I just realized there is no 'popcorn' smilie....)

Its purpose is to be a range toy, so size is not a consideration. 10 shot capacity preferred.

I am considering a S&W M617, either in 4 or 6 inch but probably 6 inch, and a S&W model 63. Adjustable sights preferred.

A Model 43C was also in the running, but I already have a small J frame .38 and I want something different. No adjustable sights on that model AFAIK.

I have no particular reason for them other than that I'm familiar with S&W products and have no complaints.

Once I began searching I found similar Ruger variants, but I have no experience with Ruger, and even less than that with any other models.

Why a revolver? I already have a Beretta U22 Neos and I'm bored with it.

Post your likes and dislikes.

Smith & Wesson .22 LR Model 617 period. Everyone at the range wants to shoot it. I have a four inch & LOVE IT!!!
Their customer service is second to none. Be warned-once you shoot it you will not want to leave without one...

Lots of good options. My favorite of all is this 1963 Old Model Single Six, retrofitted with the XR3 grip frame, claro walnut and a bullseye ejector. Been trying in vain to wear it out for 16yrs now, to the tune of about 30,000rds.

Here it is dirty, wearing some elk antler.

Number two would be this K-22. First started learning point shooting with this sixgun and killed many a rabbit with it.

Picked up the 4" version for a song, after a gun shop offered $125 for it in trade.

Then there's the lovely USFA 12/22. Proving that 10 shots is better than 6 and 12 is even better than that!

Great shooting little sixgun in the stainless New Bearcat.

I recently bought a Ruger SP101 .22LR 8 shot and it is a fantastic gun. I got it at a local gun show in a face to face for $400. I could not be happier with the gun.

Hi...
I will put in a vote for a Dan Wesson DA .22LR revolver.
Mine is a blued 6-shot model with a full-length underlug. It is stunningly accurate with a variety of ammunition.
These can still be found for a good price...I bought mine used at a gun show 2-3 years ago for $450. Much cheaper than any local gun shop wants for a new S&W 617 or even a Ruger Single-Six.
