Hello all. I currently have a GunVault Mini handgun safe. IMO it's a pain in the behind to maintain the 8 or 10 AA batteries and programming is equally annoying.
Can anyone recommend a high-quality handgun safe for bedside use that possibly does NOT utilize batteries and electronics? Just needs to keep my 6 y/o out, be consistently reliable and have key backup. Thanks for any recommendations.

HandGun Box Safes. No batteries, no keys, five button user set Simplex lock (sequential, combination or both).

I have this one, it is very tough and very reliable:

DAC SportSafe

I'm happy with my DAC SportSafe, $55 from Walmart.com. (My local store didn't carry them.) I have a four inch S&W N frame revolver on the bottom of mine, and there's a shelf above that where I keep an S&W 642.

It's an electronic keypad safe, with four buttons programmable from three to six digit passwords. You can have a master password and up to two other passwords. You can also set a motion alarm that goes off if someone tries to make off with it. It has a keypad beep sound that can be turned off.

The safe comes with a mounting plate you attach to a shelf, piece of furniture, or vehicle. You can buy extra mounting plates if you want to easily move the safe between locations.

It's battery-operated, and you can buy an external power supply so that the batteries become the backup for the AC. It comes standard with a key backup.

P.S. Does anyone know what amperage the 12V AC/DC adapter should be? I went to buy one at Radio Shack tonight. I took the manual, but it didn't say if the adapter should be 300 mA, 1000 mA, or something else.

I also like this safe very much, especially the no-batteries part. Very sturdy and simple to use.

And the safes are excellent and come with hardware for permanent mounting to something less easily carried away.

my advice is that no-matter what one you get, get one big enough for future purchases. I bought one safe, filled it, bought another(making the mistake of buying another similar sized safe) and of course had to evetually buy a third one - In fact - i dont think I would ever buy another handgun safe - i think you should just buy a nice rifle safe with extra shelves to put your pistols on.

Forwhatever its worth - if you decide you must buy a handgun safe - look into the DAK ones - i like that one best of all.
