I've got a couple fixed blade hunters that need good quality utility grade pouch sheaths. They are custom D2 drop points by Mad Poet aka Mel Sorg Jr. who passed away years ago. I want to give one to my son in law as a gift.
any recommendations?
Thanks

Thanks but I am atleast 1 hour drive from any leather shop. I will reach out to a couple of folks in the link you provided.
Long story told short is I figure I have only 1 or 2 hunts left in me and I want to gift a couple of my knives to my son in law and his buddy who will be hosting us for an elk hunt next year. (Hopefully)
I also have my grandfathers stag handle Marbles Ideal circa 1920 that needs a sheath.
Thanks

See if Lifter can help you at Liftersleather.com

He had to quit making sheaths for me but still does some and he makes the best I've seen.

Sheaths

Kingcreek;
Are you the least bit crafty? if so, a little leather and a couple of tools will give you all the sheath you need. :) Starting as a complete know-nothing, I have finished 8 knives and sheaths and 3 holsters to my satisfaction. 7 of the knives were gifts, and my grandson butchered this year's Antelope with his.
I've never worked with Kydex, but from the instructional videos I've watched, it's not all that labor or tool intensive. I may even try it sometime, myself.

Tandy leather offers a kit you can use as a starting point. They also offer several pattern books, and YouTube can teach you the basics of tooling the leather to make it look good. The initial outlay might seem expensive but it will last forever. I bet your son in law would appreciate the handmade sheath from you as much as or more than one made by someone else.

Another vote for Lifter if he is still doing it. He did a lot of work for me and I was very happy with it. He took the time to write back and forth to make sure you got what you want.

With anyone doing custom work you will have to send them out either for leather or kydex unless you have a std factory knife (which the customs aren't).

If Lifter is out, I would suggest sending one to someone to test their work. If you like it send them the lot to do.

Thanks all. I'm fine with sending them out. I know it can't be done without them.
I've made a couple sheaths but they end up looking too primitive. These need good leather sheaths once and for all.
I have a nice 4" drop point with cocobolo scales for an all purpose field knife.
And a "camp set" that Mel and I designed together, consisting of a 4.5" deep bellied semi skinner and a 3" caper both in Desert Ironwood. All are D2 steel heat treated by Paul Bos back in the day.
My son in law is trying to put together an elk hunt for 2016. It will be my last hunt and I want to give one to his buddy our host and the others to my SIL.

knife sheaths

You can have one custom made out of leather.
Alot of leather shops will do custom work. I don't know where your from but I know there are a few on Main St. in Daytona Beach.
Good Luck
Gary
