There's nothing wrong with a good used 870 Wingmaster. With a Rem-Choke barrel (26" or 28" would be my suggestion) it should cover just about anything you'd want to do with a shotgun.

If you're on a budget and want an O/U, you might want to look for a used SKB. They are built like tanks and any decent shotgun-smith can service them if there's a problem.

Whatever you buy, make sure it has interchangeable choke tubes. That will give you the versatility you need.

I think the intuition for the O/U is correct. If you get pump you will not go wrong with the 870, 1300, BPS, W'by, Ithica, or Nova. To me the Nova is overly bulky. Buy new for a pump. For a right~priced O/U try CDNN for a CZ, Weatherby, Winchester, Charles Daly, and other brands. With patience you can find 'used in new condition' Browning, Berretta, Ruger, SKB, Ruger, Winchester, Franchi, or Weatherby. Try Jaqua's online too.

Remington 870 Wingmaster if you can afford it, Express if you cannot. 12 ga 26-inch barrel. I own three one wingmaster and two expresses. can't beat them!!
