I thinking of a new shotgun purchase this summer. I currently have a Stoeger Condor 20 ga. , that I bought to hunt pheasants. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy upland hunting (thought I wanted o/u), so I went cheap. I'd like to get a semi-auto now and might use it for some waterfowl as well. I'm leaning towards a Benelli either Ultralight or Montefeltro (sp?). Mostly want to semi for the extra capacity over the o/u and quicker shots than pump. I'm not really interested in a pump, so bring on the semi-auto suggestions...what would you buy? Why? 12 or 20 ga?

Both Beretta and Benelli score high marks for their semi auto shotguns, as do some others. Remember for waterfowl, you're only giving up 1 round with your O/U. Since you mention waterfowl, 12 is the way to go - there are more non-tox varieties out there

Not necessarily better - it is different.

Since it isn't gas, the chamber area, etc., remains cleaner - good thing. Since it isn't gas, it doesn't use the gas to slow the recoil pulse, meaning more felt recoil to you - bad thing.

Without a gas system, it is also lighter - great for toting all day hunting chukar and pheasant, but more shoulder-thumping when shooting, especially hot and heavy loads

My suggestion would be to go to your local shotgun club (the trap/skeet variety) and see if you can borrow or rent both types and shoot them to see which one you like better. While Benelli is owned by Beretta, it does not mean their guns fit the same. Check out the Browning, even the Remington 1100 - finds the one that fits YOU the best and has that "feeling" which only you will know when you find it.

If you stay with one of the quality names and models, you'll have a gun that lasts for a lifetime or three

Oddly enough the least expensive inertia/ Benelli system comes on a Stoeger. They are available, from your Benelli dealer. Next up is the Franchi, also an inertia/delay/recoil system. All operate cleaner than gas autos.
The Stoegers have gotten some pretty nice reviews, in the Turkey Hunting magazines. Go to Benelli s website and check em out. Try not to get into the
Who owns who/imports who/who makes who/is a holding company of who discussion. Because ,...well just don't.
