I know that the subject of concealed carry insurance is a topic that is often discussed but what I want to know is if you, or someone you know, has used concealed carry insurance and what are your opinions of the carrier you used. I'm not trying to get into the debate of "buy it vs don't buy it". Just looking for recommended carriers. I have listed, in the poll, the carriers I have been able to locate. If I have missed one, feel free to let me know and I will add it to the poll.

Thanks in advance for taking the poll.

You cannot beat Massad Ayoob in your corner and to do that you will have Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. I have had the opportunity to work with Marty Hayes and Mas on two cases and I am amazed at the knowledge they have of the court system and defending those who need help. Next, many of the organizations will reimburse you if you win your case. The ACLDN will send a check for at least 10 Thousand Bucks within 24 hours so you will have immediate assistance from an attorney who knows how to defend INNOCENT people.
Last Summer I was on of 25+ instructors from around the nation who attended a 5 day workshop given by Mas Ayoob on testifying in court. By doing that Mas and Marty have trained instructors around the nation who are familiar with the attorneys in their area and can act as expert witnesses in the ACLDN defense of you. Several members of this forum have been defended by Mas and Marty in the use of Lethal Force.

For the longest time I used Marty Hayes' outfit as my baseline - not that I compared everything out there, but they seemed to be hard to beat (and there were some absolute junk plans out there).

I don't know how they stack up (you'll have to do your own research) but I've listened to numerous hours of podcasts over the years where lawyers from both Second Defense and Texas Law Shield (now U.S. Law Shield since they went nationwide) discussed their plans, compared to some others, and covered many actual cases they handled (many with no shooting involved).

Second Call and U.S. Law Shield may give Marty Hayes out fit a run for their money!?

I went with the USCCA, but after looking over the benefits of the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network, I may switch to them. One of the issues that I want to confirm with the USCCA is that if you plead guilty to a lesser charge to avoid a trial and the possibility of jail time, they don't cover anything. As I understand the ACLDN, and correct me if I'm wrong, they'll cover your defense cost if, in their opinion, you can reasonably claim self defense. That coverage applies even if you plead guilty to a lesser charge. In regards to civil suits, the USCCA will cover those damages up to the policy limit if you are not convicted of a crime where it looks like the ACLDN can help cover the cost of your defense against a civil suit. Again, I'm going to confirm all of this tomorrow.

I see by the poll a number of folks voted for NRA insurance - you'll have to do your own research, but I remember Sean Maloney (2nd Call Defense) stating their plan uses both a fund they have created (to get the your defense started immediately), as I believe he stated legally you cannot buy "insurance" to cover a criminal act, which you may be charged with.

I think he stated your initial defense money comes from the fund - down the road NRA insurance can / may kick in - fer instance - if you're sued civilly (which you can buy insurance for) then the NRA insurance covers your case.

Anywho - do your due diligence.

One thing I do like about 2nd Call is it's a monthly plan - you can up / lower or completely drop the plan and only be out past monthly fees.

I remember one of the plans (which seems to be popular based on the poll) when originally conceived would not cover you if you were found guilty.

I don't know if that has changed, but do you really want "insurance" that has such a conflict of interest?

For anyone interested, here's a copy of a group e-mail I recently sent - not going to modify for the forum - take from it what you will.

Remember a few of my earlier e-mails where I warned if you ever have to pull your gun (and often scenarios that don’t get to that point), THE FIRST PERSON TO CALL 911 GETS TO PLAY THE VICTIM?!

Massad Ayoob preaches it, and our latest case involves a firearms instructor that has attended Massad Ayoob’s MAG 20 and / or 40 class, so he should know better.

You can listen to his podcasts and subscribe to it at the links below – he’s been making the rounds now that his case has been dropped, but he’s out $34,000, spent almost a week in jail, and is lucky they didn’t ruin his livelihood by screwing up his medication while he was in jail.

He’s a diabetic, and his doctor has him on a cocktail of meds so he won’t have to take insulin – apparently if he’s on insulin, he can’t drive his big rig or teach driving big rigs.

The folks at the jail didn’t much care about that, and he had to fight to keep from them giving him insulin, or him needing it (they only provided one of the three meds he was on).

Anywho, here’s the bullet points:
1. He as laying down in the sleeper – his student (who was about to graduate) was driving and pulled in to gas up.
2. Another driver pulled in front of his rig and blocked him, making it difficult for his student to pull away from the pumps.
3. Words were exchanged, and the student threw the other driver “the finger”.
4. Road Rage ensued – the driver that had blocked their rig approached, and the student then let Paul know they had a problem (remember, Paul was laying down in the sleeper).
5. Paul told the student to lock the door (but the window was down) – as the gentlemen pulled himself up to the door, Paul announced I HAVE A GUN (he never pulled or showed it).
6. The gentlemen left, but yelled “you tell me that and I’m leaving my truck sitting here”.
7. The student managed to maneuver around the truck blocking his path, and they continued on their way.
8. About 30 miles down the road, a Nebraska State Trooper pulled them over and asked “do you have a gun”?
9. He informed the officer he did, had a CHP, and was a firearms instructor.
10. The trooper arrested him and hauled him off to jail!

Turns out the DA in the county he was in hates guns, and the irate truck driver at the truck stop called 911 and told them a man had threatened him with a gun, and was waving a revolver around an pointing it at him (Paul carries a Glock).

Paul spent 4 rough days in jail, trying to keep his sugar level low and stay off insulin.

He did not have insurance thru Marty Hayes’ Citizens’ Legal Defense Network, but he had crossed paths with the folks in the organization a number of times professionally, so gave them a call.

They told him they could not help him with money since he wasn’t a member, but they did everything else they could for him (for which he was grateful).

The incident happened at a chain truck stop (Flying J?) which they knew had cameras, so his lawyer (which Marty Hayes put him in contact with) got a copy of the video (no one waving a revolver around, etc.).

The DA found out about the video, knew he didn’t have a case, and tried to get Paul to plea bargain to a lesser charge, but Paul didn’t go for it.
BTW, he was charged with two felonies, one of which was “making a terroristic threat”, and could have spent up to 55 years in jail if convicted!

Next, the DA tried every delaying tactic he could, stretching the case out and costing Paul more money, until the judge finally told the DA no more delays – the trial would start.

Before the trial, the DA dropped all charges against Paul due to both the video and the fact that they could not locate the individual that had made the complaint.

What did Paul say he learned during his ordeal?
Yup…when something happens, BE THE FIRST TO CALL 911!

And he’s now a member of Marty Hayes Armed Citizens’ Legal Defense Network.
He’s lucky he’s only out $34,000 (folks online raised $9,000, so he’s out $25,000), but if he had been a member of Armed Citizens’ Legal Network he wouldn’t have had to shell out anything.

Of course, the gentlemen that filed the false report gets to go his merry way with no consequences – he could very well have pulled this stunt before!

And in another unusual case, I heard Sean Maloney (Second Call Defense) had to defend one of his members.

In this case, a friend of the member used the member’s gun and shot someone in self defense.
(I don’t remember if the Second Call Defense member had shot, been wounded, or ?)

Second Call Defense is covering the member’s expenses, but his friend who helped in his defense is on his own.

For sure, if you were victimized!

OK, why would Paul call the police on the other driver? It does not appear that he committed any crime, although one could make a case for making terroristic threats, or some such. :uhoh:

Have you not been paying attention?
The first person to call 911 gets to play the victim OR as Tom Gresham says first person to call 911 wins!

I know of one person whose CC gun is a wild color - he does so in case he's ever falsely accused of pulling his gun on someone (the police are probably going to ask him to describe the gun, and it's doubtful he'll ever guess the color).

FWIW, I had a mentally ill (a mean SOB that suffered from alcohol dementia) once accuse me of pulling a gun on him when we had no confrontation (just a passing). I knew nothing about it until an officer called me that night and started asking questions.

The next day I was at the police station asking what they were going to do about this fellow filing false reports.

That night, I got a call from the same officer telling me the gentleman had filed a report that I had come by his apartment and beat him up and cut him with a knife (the office said he had a cut on his arm).

I asked the officer what time this was supposed to have occurred - he said 11am - I told him to check the department's video or just ask his watch captain, since at 11am I was in the watch captain's office discussing the previous day's false report.

Nothing ever became of it (I think they knew what they were dealing with), but there was some blowback by LE on the fellow for filing false reports.

BTW - I've finally decided to join Marty Hayes' outfit - one thing I did notice about Second Call Defense is they cover SD only if a gun is used - Armed Citizen's Legal Defense Network covers you no matter what you use to defend yourself.

I listened to a long interview with Marty Hayes on The Polite Society podcast the other day (one of many similar interviews from Sean Maloney of Second Call Defense and the guy / gal with Texas / U.S. Law Shield).

I'm going to give them a try first mainly for all the educational materials provided to first year members (some of which may be used to defend yourself in court).

Because it is a good idea to call the police after a confrontation with another person, particularly if you felt physically threatened to the point of declaring (verbal or visual) that you had a firearm.

Because of exactly what happened.

Another thing that stands out for me is the financial assistance for your defense goes to the attorney of your choice whether in their network or not.
Coincidentally I found out that my Gun Lawyer is in the network.
And I would not call the ACLDN an insurance plan per se either. Rather, ACLDN is an organization of gun owners pooling their funds to protect one another when a member has the need to defend oneself.
