Reconsidering a 1911 (again)

Every now and then I get a 1911 bug so I start doing research on the forums and looking at Gunbroker. I look at prices and usually get over it. For a while I thought I wanted a 1911 in 9mm as they would be cheaper to shoot. Then I got a Witness Elite Match in 9mm and thought that it would be sufficient to quell that hunger for a 1911 since the Witness has a very nice SA trigger. I do shoot more accurately with the Witness than I do with any of my other 9mms. So I had put 1911s out of my mind. Again. Until last week.

I went shooting last week with a fellow that I know. He brought with him a 70s vintage Colt 1911 that he had inherited. The man he had inherited it from was a competitive shooter at Camp Perry for years. We're pretty sure that the trigger had been worked on. He let me try it. Now keep in mind that I have never fired a 1911 except for 2 shots through an Ed Brown carry 1911 that my instructor let me try. I put those two shots right next to each other. Now I pick up the Colt for the first time and proceed to put five shots in the tightest group I've made all day. Holy Cow! What a pistol. I need to rethink this whole 1911 issue.

But now I'm wondering if I would be as happy with 1911s that are not in the same league as the EB or the Colt. But man, I can't stop thinking about that Colt.

Time for more research I guess.

I know how it is with a "gunbug" knocking around in your head wbwanzer! I own Colts and love them. Haven't shot anything else in .45 though. I read on forums here that people are really fond of the SA pistols, as well as Kimbers. I reckon there's a lot of tweaking you can do to a pistol that's less costly- full length guide rods, metal guide rod plugs, frontstraps, arched or straight mainspring housings- can be put on to make it handle better for you. Hope you get to shoot a few different makes to help you with your research. Good luck!
Oh, yeah. I'm 38 now. I've wanted a Colt 1911 since I was 16 or so. I worked hard and saved up for mine. Parting with that much cash hurt for about a second or two. I don't think I'll ever regret buying them, though. Go for your dreams!

I have a couple of RRA and a Caspian put together by David Sams and a Colt from Jim Clark Sr.

However, you can definitely still get a sweet 1911 without a full smith work-up. The beauty is the trigger in my opinion, along with that it fits the hand so naturally. That is where your money should be spent. Have a competent smith stone that smooth (if it needs it. Sometimes it is golden and good to go.)

Get one. And love it!

i started with sa/da xd,beretta,sig they were all good pistols some i still have but i love my 1911's. my kimber ss pro carry .45 is my favorite. i have 2 .45's one commander & one full size s&w. i also have a kimber pro carry 9mm commander. i do love the ed brown special forces carry. saw a used one for $1800 about a month ago i kcould kick myself for not asking if they did layaway. i would have needed a few weeks to sell a couple of others to fund the ed brown. it still eats me, i dont think i will see a deal like that agin. it looked brand new maybe a box or 2 of shells through it. i think you will be verry happy with a good quality 1911. you can always upgrade it later a little at a time, until you have it perfect for you.

My first ,"other than issued" was a Colt Commander I have 8 Colts now. 1 Dan Wesson a fine pistol and Philippines made American Classic also a great pistol for the price. I found my Kimber Eclipse to be trouble and set it packing Never more a Kimber.

Reconsidering 1911

I can understand your feelings, I too went back and forth about purchasing 1911 and usually got over it once i saw the prices. but i finally broke down and bought one, and not a highend high dollar piece ( bank account wouldnt stand for it) What i did purchase was Rock Island Armory A CS to be exactly best purchase i ever made . Well now i have my second a RIA Tactical in 2 tone, and the addiction begins.

There is no comparison to a 1911 with a good trigger. There are many very good examples to be had at a decent price (still much higher than Tupperware) but if you enjoy shooting you wont be sorry. A lot of people that bought in a panic last year are now in need of money so there are a lot of good lightly used guns out there.

And that is how the 1911 addiction begins. :- )

i love the 1911 and their triggers....i have the utmost respect for the platform and JMB. However unless you train heavily in carrying and deploying 1911s then you would be better served by a modern pistol for self defense purposes.

Klash545, this would not be a defensive pistol. Just for range use. A gun I can take to the range and feel like I'm a better shooter than I thought I was.

I picked up a Dan Wesson Heritage .45ACP and I LOVE it. I've got the 1911 bug, too. Thankfully, I'm satiated for a while...but who knows when it will strike again...

Save yourself some time and aggravation. Don't buy a 1911 until you buy the one you REALLY want. For me, it was a Les Baer, and I've been happy ever since.
