A relative of mine recently purchased a used safe with a S and G lock and no combination. The door was off the safe and the back was accessible. We removed the rear cover on the lock and after a little work, we came up with a combination that seems to work fine. If It was an option I would have taken it to a local safe dealer and had them work on it but previous experience with them makes me reluctant to do this. Is there an issue with figuring the combination out by watching the discs in the lock and if so what would be the proper course of action?

Thanks,

There is no problem figuring out the combination in this fashion.

However, you aren't going to notice if the lock has any problems that may result in issues down the road. I usually suggest that anybody who buys a safe with an unknown history simply replace the lock all together. This is cheap insurance against the costs of a future lock out.
