I have a couple of ARs and have a vortex red dot on one and an eotech red dot on the other. I'm thinking about putting a scope on one of them. What do you guys prefer? Red dot or scope?

If you were going to scope one what kind of scope would you put on it. I shop SWFA.s sample list and will buy from there.

I prefer Red Dots but I'm thinking about using a Leupold Mark AR Mod for my next build. It's a good optic around what I want to spend. There is a few different models but I haven't figured out which one I want to go with.

That being said, the reason I prefer RDS Optics on an AR platform is due to the quick target acquisition. Most of the encounters I'm likely to engage in will be in an urban environment where quick target acquisition takes precedence over magnification. I have no problem keeping shots within a 8 inch square at 300 yards using a RDS. Eight inch groups at 300 yards is all you need on a human sized target. That being said, anything over 200 yards, I'll be grabbing my Remmy 700.

Here is the Leupold Sights I am thinking about.

I like Red dots and low power magnification on my AR's. You can always split the difference however and mount a magnifier behind the red dot.

I prefer a low power fixed or 1-4x scope. To me...the AR isn't just a close quarters combat rifle. In fact...if you're shooting multiple targets at close quarters by yourself...you will be dead soon. Its not a video game.

The AR even w the short barrel is very capable out to 200/300m or more. With a low power scope you can make good hits out that far. With a red dot, its not helping much at those distances but it is an advantage for close fast "work". Call me an old man but I've shot iron sights out to 500m. Maybe its a generational thing but I don't "get" the red dots. Perhaps I just haven't given them a good enough chance. Mostly to me though...its a philosophical issue in that I have zero plans of quickly engaging multiple targets up close. If that happens, my plan went to hell and my low power scope will be quick and good enough or ill just shoot over the top of the gun if its that bad.

Mounting a magnifier behind a red dot is an option but then you have twice the stuff hanging off your rifle. There are some red dot magnified scopes now, I'd prefer that if I wanted a red dot.

AR world has lots of options. You just have to decide what kind of gun you want it to be then kit it out accordingly.

What kind of optic you want depends on what kind of shooting you plan on doing.

Nothing is faster up close than a 1x reflex sight, like your EoTech. The 1x is usable out to 250-300 yards, depending on how big of targets you shoot. What the 1x optics aren't is precision sights for seeing how many holes you can make touch on a bullseye.

Magnified scopes let you see what you're shooting better but at the cost of being slower to get hits very close up, requiring you to have your eye placed very precisely behind the optic, and limiting your field of view. The higher the magnification, the worse these problems become.

Considering most people can't find targets or don't have access to ranges that are longer than 300-400 yards, personally I find anything over about 6x to be overkill. My own magnified optics are 3.5x and 4x, which, for me, hits the sweet spot of being able to acquire targets, have a decent eye relief and field of view, and have a decent sized exit pupil.
