What AK-specific red dot scopes are out there? I'm looking to pay < $150.

Or, what optic would you recommend for a Saiga sporter .223 for plinking, defense, and coyote hunting (< $150 w/ mount). Quick target acquisition a must, magnification not required. My Saiga will someday be converted by Tromix.

Thanks.

I have a Millet that works well on a 9mm carbine. .223 out of an AK shouldn't kick much harder than that, so I think it could stand up to the recoil.

Does the PK-A scope line up with the bore centerline? I have heard that some don't and that is curious to me.

No its right above the bore on mine. Why do they do it, I'm not real sure but it doesnt detract from the sight's ability. we're talking -maybe- an inch at 100 yards if you zeroed it at 25yards.

The PK series is fairly cool because they sit at a perfect height. You can still use your iron sights, and the AK mount allows the sight to come on and off, on and off, on and off, on and off all day long without loss of zero.

I just looked around and couldnt find any PK-A red dots.

for 50 bucks more you CAN easily get the PK-AS which is a much better unit. When the battery runs out it still offers a black silouette, which during the day time rocks because the sunlight wont wash it out. At night, flip on the light and bang your in business.

Do yourself a favor and knuckle down, save up, and spend your money on an Aimpoint. You wont regret it. You'll just end up down the road doing it anyway.

I've had BSA, Bushnell, and Tasco's on my AK's, with varying results. The Aimpoints cost more, but you do get what you pay for. The biggest advantage is battery life. The M2/ML2's run 24/7 for over a year, the M3/ML3's for over 5 years. I dont even bother to turn mine off anymore. Another advantage is, you can also shoot them with the front cover closed. This was you can set the dot to a comfortable brightness and go from bright to light and back again and never loose the dot. It also eliminates the need for a killflash.

As for mounts, the best by far is the Ultimak. I dont know if you can get one for the Saiga Sporter, but it will fit on a converted Saiga. I have one on both my Saiga conversion and my SAR. A forward mounted red dot mounted on the Ultimak is the only way to go. It sits low enough to shoulder and shoot just like your iron sights and with the right ring, will cowitness with them. The sight sits up front, out of the way of both handling and field of view. You will be amazed at how fast and easy it is to shoot with and make good hits. Snap shots at 100 yards are a breeze. I have yet to see any other set up work as well. The Russian sights sit WAY to high for natural shooting and some of the mounts offset the sight. They also tend to be bigger units that are right in your face and block your field of view.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like the PK-AS is probably what I'm looking for.

I'm not sure I will ever want to pay top dollar for an Aimpoint. My dad and brother have them on their muzzleloaders, and I'm just not a fan.

If I ever decided to splurge on a top quality red dot, it would 100% for sure be an EoTech but it would go atop my RRA AR, not my unconverted Saiga.

My Saigas are "beater" rifles, with the possibility of being upgraded to real AK form later in life, and refinished.

So, for now I'm looking for "budget" red dots, preferably designed for AK rifles.

Thanks again to all.

Hey, whatever works best for you. I've been down that road and just wanted to save you some grief. :)

The Saiga's are a lot better in their original configuration, and I especially like them a little shorter.

What do you mean by better in original config? This is my first AK. Do they loose reliability when converted? Are they less accurate?

Oh, wait... do you mean "original" as in converted to "real AK" w/ pistol grip, new trigger group, and hi-cap mag capability? If so, then I fully understand.

Also, where is the best place to send it for conversion (price vs. performance wise)?

Thanks.

The Saiga's are actually "converted" to the Sporter configuration so they can be imported. They have to be converted back once they get here.

Mine is a Krebs AK103K, which has a 14" barrel with a brake welded on to make the legal length. I've been very happy with mine. I also hear that AK-USA is another source with a good rep.

Could you explain that a bit more? Do you mean that the optic sits high so that affects the sight to bore alignment? There are quite a few optics that sit high.

I was over as Saiga-12 and some folks got defensive when I wondered why some optics did not line up with the bore centerline (vertically). Being offset laterally just adds more complications to long shots, as far as I can tell.

pk as - russian, tough, requires no batteries in black dot mode. No internal moving parts, the whole tube is moved on the base to adjust zero. $200 or thereabouts.

PS you can get it with a low mount offset mount, (so you can see the irons), or a high mount centered over the bore.

You don't happen to have a list of the offset optics, so I can avoid them? There is no mention either way on the site that sell them.

The offcentered sights work just fine, the size of the dot will erase any error due to the offcentered mount.

People we're talking at most 1" at 100 yards, there are VERY few shooters here who can benefit from the difference. Its not like the sight is inaccurate, just adjust for it. Russian optics are really sort've minimized for shorter ranges, and it makes sense. You can go from a red dot to a telescopic sight in maybe..MAYBE 15 seconds if you took your time. So its not such a huge deal.

You'll just end up down the road doing it anyway.
Actually, most dont. Its a cool setup, but most guys dont go that way on in the AK world.

For $30-40 over the price of an ultimak you can have a kobra (mount built in). I guarantee you it will be better than any $30-40 red dot you stick on top of the ultimak.

For a $150 solution look no further than a used kobra. They're listed here pretty regularly..
