I deer hunt with an S&W 4506-1 in .45 Super..but my eyes are not what they used to be..so I started looking for a Holo-Red Dot sight mount...My 4506 came with factory adjustable sights and has a looong dovetail machined in the slide so there were NO mounts available for this obsolete handgun..So..I designed one and had Heritage Arms of Colorado machine one for me from a CAD file I made...I will give anyone that wants it this file for nothing..then it is up to you to line up your CNC shop to make it...The dovetail is slightly oversized by a 0.001" or so..so it requires a little hand fitting to get it where it will press in easily...The price of one-off maching is pretty high but if 50 or more want one it is very reasonable...but can get you own quotes...This sight is for a Picitinny Rail sight mount but I can design one and create a CNC file for a low mount direct red-dot sight mount of about any type..I don't want to make any money on this..just help out other old guys that can't see their open sights good enough for deer hunting... 4506mountbase-L.jpg

https://www.dropbox.com/s/buz1opi8td8mvo5/dotbase.step?dl=0 This is the url that will let you access the CAD file for the sight base above. The file is in .STEP format which seems to be universally accepted by most CNC machines....Note that in my case I had to drill out the through hole in the bottom of the base with a 1/8" drill before the stock sight mount screw (which is reused) would go in..either I screwed up the dimensions on the design or the CNC operator just went one size too small on the drill. But it is no big deal. This base can be machined out of any metal you want but I would suggest aluminum for ease of fitting. Please note that I have NOT had time to test this base to any extent and if you make one for yourself and it flys off and hits you in the face I accept NO responsibility. I plan to shoot the gun today and I will cover my face before the first shot! LOL! However I have designed in radius transitions to limit stress risers from forming....Hope this helps other old handgun hunters..

*note...if you download this file you will NOT be able to "see" anything unless you upload the file into a CAD/CAM program. I used FreeCad to design this base and it is actually "free" to download and is my favorite CAD software..

I just finished a range session with my .45 Super using the mount described above. I mounted a TruGlo True-Tec micro holo sight on the pic rail of the mount for this test. The loads I fired were 200 grain cast SWC at 1230 fps and a 255 grain cast SWC at 1020 fps so these were NOT powder puff .45 acp loads. The gun functioned perfectly and nothing losened up after the firing of about 20 rounds...The sight held its zero just fine (after initial zeroing). There was NO movement of the mount after firing..There was NO movement of the sight on the pic rail. Now I am just waiting for deer season...
