I'm putting either a red dot or low powered shotgun scope on my 870 Supermag turkey/slug gun and I was wondering which you guys would suggest. I'll be using a B-square saddle mount.

Will a red dot hold up to the recoil of 3 1/2" turkey loads or 2 3/4" slugs?

If you recommend a scope, how much eye relief?

I'm looking to spend less than $100.

Any comments appreciated.

red dot will work fine for under 100, but a quality scope for a shotgun is not to be had for 100 and under.

Personally I wouldn't trust a $100 red dot either. The Truglo clamp on sight would be a better option in my opinion, until you have about $300 to spend on optics.

Either one would work OK, but you should up your budget a bit if you want one to really be able to live on your shotgun. You want as much eye relief as you can get, with either scope or dot.

And be sure you get the comb of your stock up to the point where you can get a good cheek weld with the higher line of sight the optics will give you...

I have had this on my 1300 black shadow slug gun for at least 5 years, maybe even 7+. I holds zero most years, barrel removal makes me wonder if it's the sights fault.......

I don't like scopes on slug guns, I have a bushnell 1.5-4 slug gun scope on it before, could not get it far enough from my eye for comfort......Red dot is better 10 to 1 as long as you are not trying to shoot past 150-175 yards IMO, the dot just sucks past that. 5 MOA dot at 200 yards is 10" and that takes up a lot of deer...........

Best of luck,
Tony
