Went to Brownell’s website to look for potential upgrades to my RCBS Uniflow. I happened upon Redding’s powder measures. Then I noticed this:
The Match-Grade Model 3BR was created to be the ultimate powder measure... "out of the box" match ready! Since its creation this powder measure has been helping Silhouette shooters and Benchrest Shooters win matches and set new records.

It all started witht he time proven accuracy and reliability of the original Model 3 Powder Measure. The Model 3BR Powder Measure utilizes all of the features of the original Model 3 and to that Redding added the conversion features that Benchrest shooters were looking for.

It quickly became their most popular powder measure for two very good reasons... Its broad range of charging cpacity and its performance record.

Additional Metering Chambers are availiable. Hangun Metering Chamber has a charge range of 0 to 10 grains. Rifle or Universal Metering CHamber has a charge range of 5 to 100 grains.

Does that final statement mean I’ll need to buy additional chambers for each charge weight range I might be interested in? I’m looking for something that would be good in the range 3-50 grains.

I first bought the Redding 3BR and it was really good for rifle, but the large chamber made setting up for light pistol charges a pain to get consistency. I purchased the extra pistol metering chamber and that was great for pistol loads, only problem was switching back and forth between the two.

What I ended up doing was leaving the 3BR set up for rifle charges and then purchased a Redding 10X for pistol. The 10X gets used lot more because I not only do pistol with it but also do small rifle charges. The 10X has a powder range of 1 to 25 grains.

Hope this helps you with you search, may want to consider using the uniflow for rifle and something like the 10X for lighter charges.

I agree with jrumsey, powder measures with a wide range of powder charge capacities have trouble being consistent down at the lower end.

I started with an RCBS Uniflow which is great for smaller rifle cartridges but is difficult to get it to run consistently at smaller pistol charges.

I also then added a Redding 10-X for handgun. I even modified a 10-X to operate on a Hornady case activated powder die so that i could use the Redding on my progressive presses.

Changing the metering drum on then Uniflow is mostly inconvenient. It seems the wrong metering drum is always installed in the powder measure when you embarking on a new reloading session. I'm not familiar with how Redding swaps out the metering insert, but I'd bet it is similarly aggravating as the Uniflow.

May I have your Uniflow? Send a PM and I’ll send my address.

Is doing a double dump for rifle out of the question? I really like the best money can buy but on the same token money is not something I have a lot of.... if a double or triple dump on the same gear works then my ratio of pistol to rifle would totally support that.

You'll need a total of two chambers, the Universal and Handgun. I have both with the 3BR...all around thumbs up. Exchanging one for the other takes a minute; one knurled, finger-tight fastener and one Allen head set screw.

Another two Redding powder measures reloader here, a 10X and a BR-30. I have to use the Hornady that came with my LNL for .458 Win Mag, but the BR-30 will do up to at least .30-06, and that is the largest I load for, excluding the .458.

Guy, it’s still not clear what I’d need to buy. Does the Match-Grade Model 3BR come with both a rifle and handgun chamber? And does the handgun chamber handle small charges well, say 3 grain and up?

Download the Redding catalog, read the descriptions and you’ll figure it out.
