i'm running out of resources, so i bring this to the firearms research thread, though it is probably technically an optic...

i have a redfield 70 lh micrometer sight with target knobs on a savage 99. the redfield sight won't adjust for elevation. upon disassembly of the sight, it would appear i am missing a part or two, but i don't know what they are or what they look like, thus i can't make/acquire/buy new parts to bring this sight back into working condition.

is there any possibility that someone has a parts diagram, or even a working example and can tell me what i'm missing?

on the elevation turret, i have the knob w/ set screw. the sight currently has the knob sitting on an unthreaded post that appears to be pressed into the sight base. there are no other springs, washers, gears, hydraulics, or batteries involved.

if i install the knob on the post, and tighten the set screw, the knob does not turn. if i force the issue, the knob just spins on the post and accomplishes nothing other than clicking in and out of its detents and stripping the post.

how do i bring this sight back to working order?

thanks for any ideas.

Hmmm...this might be a tough one to get any info on, but I'm sure someone out there must know something.

Plenty of us on here use optics, so you're definitely not in the WRONG place.

I have an old Redfield, but not sure it's the one you're referring to.

Any chance you could get a few pictures up of the parts in question?

Funny, but I just completely dissembled and cleaned one of those Redfield sights for a guy about a month ago.

Are you sure the "unthreaded post" isn't just the elevation screw, screwed all the way down inside the sight and stuck by dried grease?

Take the two screws out, and the retaining plate off, and you should be able to pull the dovetail elevation silde out of the base.
Then I'd soak it with penetrating oil, maybe apply a little heat, and have a go at unscrewing it again.

thanks, much guys!

i'll try to get pics up of it tonight... and after reading rc's post, it could indeed be perzactly as he describes - a seized elevation 'screw'. i'll get some pics and then break out the torch and test the theory of the grease.

if it is indeed the correct 'post', that thing is in there properly tight...

i've done all that and it comes apart nicely. one thing nifty about these things is you can just tell the precision machine work that went into them. i really hope i can fix this because i want to hunt it this fall, but can't in its current state.

will do!

here it is, all seized up in the down position:

and disassembled:

and after oil, heat, channel locks, and the 5-7 minutes it took to get it in proper working order:

and one more just because i got the camera all drug out:

thanks again - i really appreciate the help. this old savage is the only rifle i've owned for 1 hunting season or more that has killed nothing. i hope to remedy that this fall.
