The finish on my 642 looks very bad now after a lot of pocket carry. Does anyone know of how one would refinish one? With a normal gun it could be parked or reblued but how does that work with alloys?
Thanks!

Paint, or for the big bucks IonBond, Mellinite, NR3...

No hardchroming alloys. Anodizing instead.

There's a simple answer to this one, if it's a recent model and if you bought it new.

Inquire at S&W customer service. I believe refinishing will be covered by warranty, and will provide as good a finish as the original.

As for an alternative--I suspect I would get Robar to do it in the aftermarket, although it would be costly.

Just have it bead blasted. I have a stainless steel Charter Arms Bulldog that was looking a bit ragged from carrying and had some fine pitting on the outside of the barrel where a former owner must have left it sitting in a leather holster for a long time. It looked like the holster got moist and allowed some rust to start. Anyway, I took it to a local gunsmith to have a little custom work done they bead blasted the whole gun and gave it a nice matte finish. It looks like new now.

Ignore it. It is simply an overspray, and its flakey appearance has no effect on the revolver itself. Consider this: everyone who sees it will know it has been to h**** and back. I can hardly wait until my 637 looks like that!

My thoughts as well. My 642 has a nice amount of wear on it nowadays. My 1911 on the other hand still looks nearly new. There is nothing like honest wear that makes a gun look even more menacing/business-like.

Hmmm... Seems to me a stainless gun really doesn't HAVE any finish. It's just metal, right?

My two "working" guns are both stainless ex-cop pistols that looked sad when they arrived so I removed the major dings with a fine file and then I polished them up on a buffing wheel.

Did the same with a 659 but don't have the before photo.
