I am used to rust bluing, and i am having some trouble with the aluminium receiver. Ive tried duracoat, alumahyde, and engine paint i just cant get it to come out good. I polish it and degrease it. Ive tried heating it up before i apply the finish and after. Any help would be appreciated.

Polishing it does not help at all for any of the spray paint / bake on finishes stick.

Bead blast or fine sand blast it first so the paint has some 'tooth' to get a grip on, and stay on.

Otherwise, aluminum is best professionally refinished by color hard-anodizing, like it was in the first place.

aluminum receivers

I have two .22 riles that have aluminum receivers. One I painted with a can of black, flat spray on paint. Then I 'polished' the finish as best I could, then coated it with a clear spar urethane.
The other one, I simply polished it and left it with a natural finish.
This was about 2 years ago. Both are holding up well.

I used black appliance epoxy on my old Marlin 60 receiver. 4 years and still looks great!

In the good ole days we used zinc chromate primer on aluminum but like every other cool thing, you can't get it for home use anymore because of that pesky cancer thing. The closest substitute I've found is Alodine. Application took a little getting used to so I'd recommend doing a few test scraps first.

On aluminum boats we used to wash down with vinegar and rinse with deionized water before painting. It removes the natural oxidation that occurs with contact of air, reoxidation takes a matter of hours.

add on--

One thing I just remembered: I used some of the cheap Walmart clear spray paint on the aluminum. I figured is it got scratched, I'd just lightly sand it and spray it again.
