Refinishing stock

I've finally decided that my shotgun is getting to look pretty ugly after umpteen years of jostling around in my pickup, and I want to give it a new finish.

I know how to add new finish (I think), but my problem is what to use to remove the old. Alcohol doesn't seem to touch it. The wood is in need of a good sanding to remove some unsightly marks and dimples, so a rather harsh liquid solution should be no problem.

If any one can offer some advice, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.

By the way, the shotgun is a Beretta Silver Snipe O/U, so the buttstock and forearm can easily be removed from the metal works.

I use Kleen Strip Premium to take down any unwanted finish. You can get it in most Home Depots. Also, if they have it, Formby's Paint Remover Afterwash is great stuff -especially for scrubbing out the goo from the checkering...

Slap the KS gel on thick, let it work, and scrape off with a non metallic instrument. Let the stock dry at least overnight after you've removed all the finish... Raise the dents with the steam iron, let it dry, then sand it.
