Refinishing

Good evening,

I'm looking to have two rifles refinished...a Browning BAR and a Ruger M-77. Both rifles shoot great, but look a little on the "shot hard and put up wet" side (both were bought recently in this condition).

I'm looking for suggestions from y'all as to refinishing options. I'd like to have something a little more maintenance-free than blueing, but still classy. I'm planning to put synthetic stocks on both rifles, as the climate here in north central Texas is a bit variable - I hunted last week in the morning in sleet at 25 degrees and the same afternoon in sunshine and 70 degrees. Gotta love it!

I'm not at all opposed to a really good park job, but I would like it to be well done. And money IS an object, but I'm willing to pay for a first rate job.

Maybe I can help. It sounds to me like you are looking for one of the polymer teflon finishes. They are very rust and corrosion resistant and self lubricating. They are great for hunting rifles that are out in all types of weather.

That is an idea, but what about powder coating?

I am going to look at some examples of this type of work this weekend and am really interested in the grey with 20% gloss.


Anyway, just curious if anyone has had this done...

powder coating is a very thick type of coating that also conducts heat. Not what you want on a firearm.

Take a look at Mac's. We've been doing a molly over parkerizing finish for over twenty years and we also have developed a process for powder coating certain parts. (Long gun barrels, certain receivers, etc) All of our finishes will conduct heat which is exactly what you want unless you want to keep the heat in. Heat conduction in a firearm eliminates hot spots and helps them to run cooler. Merry Christmas and keep yer powder dry, Mac.

The powder coating (over parkerizing) on my CZ-75B Military model seems to be holding up very well and I haven't heard any real complaints about it from anyone else. It's reportedly prone to chipping, but I haven't seen any evidence of it so far.

KG Gun-Kote is what I used to refinish several handguns. It's quite durable and stays clean. It works as advertised, looks good and is available in a wide variety of colors in semi-gloss and matte finishes.

I've refinished my Glock in such a way as to really test the wear characteristics, in particular, I coated the barrel. It's only worn in the places where there is direct friction and impact, and even that took 200 or so rounds to wear all the way through. The breach face on the slide hasn't even been completely worn off yet.

Here's a pic right after I refinished it.

I'll try to get some "after" photos tonight. But for charging through the brush the finish should hold up just about forever. The key is for it to be properly prepped, applied, and cured, which is a lot of work and can take some specialty equipment.

I don’t agree with your opinion. Nearly whole production of guns from CZUB is covered by powder coatings KOMAXIT. This type of coatings was specially developed for guns by Swiss gun industry for field conditions. I have good experiences with on my servicing guns. It’s very hard coat which stands on gun and it is resistant. No problem with scratches from holstering. It is not so pretty like some other types of coatings however it looks good and keeps very long time on gun. Corrosion resistance is also good. IMHO any good coating is Tenifer with black paint too. My opinion is that powder coating is good for field conditions. On the other site we can speak about coatings using Titan etc. My personal carry gun Kimber Custom II is refinished by this Komaxit. I will try to post a picture.

Out your way in Alpine, Texas is a guy by the name of Virgil Tripp. His hardchrome finish work is top notch and will go a long way in protecting your weapons from the elements.
