Well, my wife might let me purchase a new revolver with part of our return. I'm looking at either:
A. Taurus Tracker in 45 ACP (local dealer has it in stock).
B. Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC with 45ACP. Same dealer can order it for me.

Which should I go with? I would love to get a 625 or Thunder Ranch. But, that exceeds my budget by at least $250.

The Tracker looks like a great idea, but I have my reservations about it being a Taurus. Yes, I've owned several Tauruses(?) before. I just think the Ruger will take much more use and abuse over the years.

I have never owned a Taurus, but I have looked at several belonging to others and haven't been impressed. I do own a bunch of Rugers in .30 Carbine, .357, .44 and .45. The most fun is the .45 Colt with a spare cylinder for .45 ACP. I have had one of mine trimmed for .45 AR as well.

Understand that any time you buy a Taurus, you are taking a risk. I owned a Taurus 85 titanium, and it was excellent. Another .45 colt titanium was also pretty good.
A taurus 94 I had needed work immediately (I bought it new). It never was exactly right (shot well after warranty work, but would not lock up very tight). I just didn't trust it.
So 2 out of 3 were ok. And that seems to be the average. Most are great. Many are not. Far more than S&W or Ruger's guns need warranty repairs right off the bat, and are a pain in the a$$ to get fixed, and may never be done right.
Bottom line: Taurus's best guns match up against anybody's, but they let far too many lemons out the door. Its a box of chocolates...you never know what you'll get from them.
Go with the Ruger. Reliable as a hammer.

Ruger

Have you been to Bachman Guns over by Love Field? Nice place with a fair selection (I have no affiliation with the establishment.)

I'm not a fan of Taurus, nor of ported barrels. I have two Rugers in .45 Colt, one 7 1/2" barrel and the other 5 1/2". Both are fine guns -- the shorter barrel is better if you're driving or sitting, while the 7 1/2" is no disadvantage when you're hiking or on horseback.

I voted Ruger, not because I have a anti Taurus agenda but I do admit Ruger quality would be better and in this case I like the versatility the Ruger would give you with 2 cylinders and the ability to fire hot 45lc out of that gun.

Nope. But, I already have 2 local dealers (closer to me) who take care of my needs.

I don't think you mentioned the intended purpose for the pistol. However, I can't think of anything you can't do with that Ruger combination; and I am saying that without any reservations towards Taurus guns. My dad carries a Taurus .357 (can't remember the model, 85?) and shoots it very well and it does a very good job for being a snubbie.

The versatility of the Ruger seems like the obvious choice.

Good Luck.

Well, I think I will see what is available at next weekends TSRA gun show/annual meeting. If I can get a good deal, I might just get me the Ruger pistol and a Ruger 10/22. I realized I was lacking a 22 caliber weapon.

I have two Tauri I like, and five Rugers (two blackhawks) I LOVE. One of those is a .45 Colt 4 5/8". I'd take that gun over ANY OTHER .45 save maybe a short barreled Redhawk or Freedom Arms just because of its strength and the handloads it's capable of handling. Besides, thumb busters are just classically beautiful.

You mentioned the S&W 625. I own one (first gun I ever bought), and I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed by it. I'm in love with the design, function, and accuracy of the gun. I'd choose it over the ruger and the taurus anyday.

Ruger Convertible. Have had my 4 5/8" blued one for about six years now and it is a favorite--versatile, accurate, light and well balanced for such a big-bore. As much as I like N frame Smiths, they are big for me, have a high bore axis, and don't perform any better.

Did have to have the cylinder throats reamed to .4525, though, and I run .454 bullets through it.

Very good gun for the money.

I'd go with the Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt....45 ACP cylinder would be nice too, but I don't have it.

Those grips are beautiful. What are they and where did you get them? I might have to get some for my Blackhawk.

Harry...thanks for your comment. A real BIG Thanks as a matter of fact. I made those grips from elk horn. It is the first pair I've made and will probably be the last...way too time consuming for me!

A broken pair of Super Blackhawk grips served as the donor for the estuchions, screw, and medallions. Besides, I had these genuine stag ones to put on the SBH...didn't make'em though.
