My Father went to the movies the other night, and they had a metal detector. He said the thing went off, over his 1.5" pocket knife.....he told the guy what it was,and he said he either had to dispose of it,or leave it in his car.at this point I would've just left....but my father said he wanted to talk to a supervisor....he told him the same thing. My father said "ok",put the knife back in his pocket and walked INTO the movies...no one stopped him,or was even paying attention.....Now my Father is 64,ex -military and doesn't look like a bad guy at all.....I on the other hand am 39 and look like an extra from the Sopranos......it would be interesting to see if I was stopped.....
He doesn;t carry, but I do.....so it looks like I won't be going to the movies anytime soon.
the mall whre the movies are has one no weapon sign at one enterance, but I haven't seen them at all of them.....as it's not illegal to carry there, just against "policy" I do......if asked to leave I would, but the whole detector thing bothers me.
oh,I almost forgot the best part..there was a bomb scare during the movie. So they were so concerned w/ a tiny pocket knife, that a BOMB got in?Of course there was no bomb(except the movie.)
I wonder what the legal ramifications are if you refuse to go through the machine?

Well, they either:

A) Do nothing and let you watch your movie.
B) Tell you to go through and upon your refusal to go through, they would ask you to leave. Upon failing to do that, you would them be committing trespass and they would most likely call the police to have charges filed.

Both AMC and Regal have the same draconian setups in place. My local AMC theatre has a Revolver with a red line through it posted on the entrance door. (similar to the no smoking signs, but there is revolver instead of cigarette).
The first time I saw the sign I asked to speak to a supervisor. Got the supervisor. Told him I was displeased and told him either the sign comes down or I vote with my wallet and no more movies there for me and my family. He was very nice and quoted company policy over and over again like a script. I thanked him for his time and told him that direct TV and payperview will be getting alot more of my $$ and they will get zero. He appologized. I left, and I voted with my wallet. I think you should do the same and spread the word about them.

Excellent point. While I do agree that the communal experience of going to the movies and seeing it with others on the big screen with the superb sounds and picture is rewarding, with the advent of high definition plasma, etc, my quality with respect to sound and picture is very respectable and I enjoy it clearly and truthfully do not miss the "movie experience" that much at all. Once you find the parking, go through the ticket booth, get popcorn and drinks, its a hassle. !! who needs it. I can stay at home, make my own popcorn, get coke or pepsi on ice and have a comfortable couch. The movies are not even an option for me anymore. Non issue. I don't know if they will go the way of the dinosaur, but there are certainly viable alternatives and if they want to make me dissarm, then they can keep their $10 popcorn and $5 drinks. By the time its all said and done it costs upwards of $20 /person to go there. At home, I can do it for under $4-$5 (including snacks and drinks) . Who needs it.

New York State? I didn't know y'all were even allowed to carry 1.5" Pocket Knives anymore. :D Just kiddin' there Tony.

I would like to believe that if they tried that stunt around here...movie attendance would be dropped as fast as a hot horseshoe. But as much as I WISH that were true, I'm not sure it indeed WOULD be. There seems to daily be more Sheeple kindly accommodating ANY & ALL intrusions into their own responsibility for themselves. Even as examples like the Virginia Tech incident increasingly show the vulnerability of anyone abdicating that responsibility.

As I understand the State Laws under which my CCW Permit was issued, businesses which post such a restriction have the right to do so. However, I am exposing myself to no greater threat than expulsion from the property should I be found in violation. As long as ignoring this CCW restriction carries no greater legal downside than being asked to leave...I'll responsibly ignore it.

Now if they'd ban cell phones I'd start going to the movies again. Haven't been in years. I wonder if the locals movie houses have detectors.

They're worried about civil liability for gang shootings. Movie theaters have degenerated into hangouts for near'do well youths and assorted scum. I almost never set foot in one anymore, esp. given the amazing array of excellent DVD's available for rent or purchase. Who wants to see "Wedding Idiots" with a bunch of people talking on cell phones or making out when you can watch Finns shooting Russians with Mosins?

The cost is another issue. Theater tickets have gotten totally out of control. For the price of taking a family to the theater you can BUY multiple films or even a collector's edition. Plus, the quality of movies has gone way down. 99% of them are garbage. The best stuff produced these days is on TV. How many modern big screen productions can match Rome, Six Feet Under or the new Battlestar Gallactica for quality drama? The movie theater is a dinosaur.

I'm well aware of how much emphasis the older critics place on the "theater experience," but I don't think they have to go to the same theaters we go to! They have their own screening rooms. Besides, the physical quality of film has gone way down. It's run on automated projectors at very high speed now, and these put a lot of wear and tear on the film. That's why you'll see flaws on even new release films. In contrast, I can watch "Lawrence of Arabia" in absolute crystal clarity with perfect audio at my leisure, and I can not only have firearms I can be CLEANING the firearms while I watch. NO PRISONERS!! NO CELLPHONES!!

Is the TSA running movie theaters now?
I don't go to the theaters unless there's a movie I want to see really bad. Otherwise I can wait until it's on DVD. It can cost $50-100 for a family to go to the movies these days.

And after all that hollywood had done for gun owners:rolleyes:

I will be open carrying in my living room, if you want the big movie screen experience, just sit closer to the TV.

My wife and I went to the movie this weekend, and I was carrying 2 handguns and a lockblade folder. Guess they don't care here in Western WA.

If they ever start that crap here, I'll just wait for the DVD. They've nearly priced themselves out of my business already - I can buy the DVD for less than to tickets to a matinee.

I thanked him for his time and told him that direct TV and payperview will be getting alot more of my $$ and they will get zero.
I'd have said; "I have two words for you buddy; BIT TORRENT!" and walked out.

Not that I'm saying I'd go torrent pirated movies or anything :uhoh: :neener:

Lemme tell you about Bogie's Bunker...

First, it contains BOTH a 3' high Shiner Bock bottle -and- a 3' high "practice" pineapple grenade. There's also a gun rack. And a coupla loaded boomsticks Just In Case.

The lights flanking the screen are made from grenades. The main lamp in the room is made from a Russian artillery shell.

The beer tapper is in the rear of the room.

92" screen
7 surround sound speakers
4 15" subwoofers
transducers mounted under the sofa (when the depth charge blows, you notice...)
6,000 watts

Heh, heh, heh...

So carry an autoloader. ;)

I don't go to the movies for one simple reason. I can't sit in the dark with my back to anyone. For that matter can't sit in public with my back to anyone either. Not a matter of carrying or not.

Idea...

First, I wouldn't advocate spending money with them... But hey, if...

IS THE SIGN LEGALLY BINDING IN YOUR STATE?

If not...

(and this might be better if you have a few friends together to do this over a night or so - not in a group)

Go in. And when the thing goes off, hand 'em your permit. See what they do.

Heh, heh, heh...

You could always just carry a glock 7, it costs more than I make in a month, but can go straight through those pesky metal detectors, see you CAN learn valuable things at the movies;)

:D

Cosmoline

If you ever get the chance to see Lawrence of Arabia in a properly
outfitted 70mm theater--do it. It was the last Super-panivison film I've seen in a theater and that was for the 1989 re-issue. Stunning. I'd love to take my kids sometime.

(Auda holding Lawrence back)-- "This was Talal's village"

My problem is I don't like rubbing shoulders with a bunch of people, and I'm spoiled by being able to avoid them at home. Also, even on a 70mm screen you can't hit pause and zoom in to see what kind of rifle someone is carrying. I doubt very much there will be many multiplex movie theaters in another ten or fifteen years. They'll vanish as suddenly and unexpectedly as the driveins did as soon as the studios can figure out a more profitable distribution system.
