Regular Bolt Actions Often Need Some "Tweaking" to Satisfy Us

I'd like a PCH done, but don't shoot much anymore (due to back problems).
It could end up an expensive wall hanger.
I really do like the HS metal riser's grip.........so is "good enough" for me.
Don't see many of them around.

Yup getting old sucks. I used to belong to 3 archery clubs at one time and shot all yr long (indoor and outdoor).
Proly why i can't do hardly any now.

Accuracy w stickbow......I tweak mine and tune to perfection.
I flubbed a black bear target in the shade at a shoot once, caught a lot of flack for that.
But redeemed myself on a called heartshot, on a chipmunk that ran by. He stopped, I snuck up and drilled him.
Much to the shock of my target buddies.

Eh, I did an archery demo in some small town the day before, fired a zillion arrows at short distance.

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure archers expect to tinker more with their gear than your average gun Hunter.
I've got one buddy who couldn't tune a bow (stick or wheel) to save his life, and another who's good at it and can afford to pay someone else to do it. Other than that everyone else I know does their own tinkering.

No one I know locally will bed their own rifles, besides my fil. Only 3 of my friends handload, and one isnt to the "making it more accurate" stage.

My used but bone stock first 700 BDL was a .243 that did iirc around 2" w one factory ammo. Sanded the bump out, free floated and got some handloads from a bud and it did an inch. Bedding the action and handloading got it sub half inch. Best 700 I ever had. Shiny. Got a matte ADL and did same work.....was a .5" rig. IMHO Remingtons used to respond favorably to tweaks back in the day. Good stuff was there. I dunno how things have changed since. Back then Rem was a safe bet

I think the blued actions are stronger and smoother than the stainless ones. If you're going to be shooting it more than hunting with it, get a blued one!

Been handloading since elementary school. No bench yet at new house, don't belong to the local club anymore (current club a half hr drive away).............I'm not shooting weekly anymore. Pretty much just hunt so new rigs get tested, tweaked and then it's "set and forget".
Windy today, so proly just do yard work.
I do all my own stock work, refinish, mod, bedding.
Worked engineering for a couple decades and problem solve in proper fashion.
Worked in a gunshop and repaired stuff, amazing how many folks want to start off filing this or that. Not even having ID'd the problem. Some of them engineers/toolmakers. One thing I learned............most folks should NOT own a screwdriver.
This thread is "tweaking rifles".
We are probably the minority.
Most folks are NOT gun people, let alone gun people of sound experience.
Bought two Remingtons where the triggers were set to unsafe, one dumped at a shop without disclosure. Stock was messed up too.
Dunno if the owner modified that rig or he had a bud do it.
Was a nice gun after I made it right (not much effort).

I'm old and cranky now, just as soon pay somebody to bed my rifle. Got nationally known 'smith not far away, and another worthy of the drive.
Both are booked, would take months to get even a simple job done.

If I was retired and had a workroom, an empty house............I might get back into "tweaking rifles".
But w fam and other...........it's just a hassle.

They however are pretty decent about rifles on the kitchen island getting scopes set or arrow fletching jig on the table.
No real interest in the stuff...............just a "yeah whatever".
Kids grew up at my local club, everybody at the LGS knows em..........dead critters in back of Jeep common.

Oldest coming over, wants to shoot. Maybe tomorrow morning if not windy.

Lunch w the ol lady, then Rural King for flowers. I'll act like I care, will pick up some .223
