I'm not certain this is the right place to post this, but here goes: I'm a tool and die maker/designer by trade and a gunsmith by hobby. I worked in the firearms industry for several years and am a life-long gun crank, so I count myself reasonably competent in those areas of gunsmithing I dabble in.
While sporterizing a VZ24 action, I began backward-engineering the Mauser 98 design on AutoCAD with an eye toward making my own actions. I decided that broaching the raceways as designed would be problematic due to the offset for the claw extractor, but I don't want to build a push-feed action.
I have a bunch of FN Mauser bolt bodies (headless) I got from SARCO. This will allow me to design the bolt head and extractor however I can make it work. I decided to combine some of the features of both the Mauser and newer Savage extractor designs. It's not complete yet, and I'm sure there will be some tweaking and debugging, but I believe I can get the concept to work. I've attached a PDF that shows the basic concept. I believe the spring detent will allow just enough lateral travel and provide enough tension to fairly replicate the manner in which the Mauser claw captures and controls the case rim.
I'm afraid I can't say when I'll have one built, but I'll post the results.
