With your experience with semi-auto handguns, which is the most reliable? as far as jamming, feeding and firing goes? caliber is not an issue, nor barrel length, just a pistol that will keep on firing without any problems (or rarely). something that can be dependable with dust, dirt, mud, rust, etc.. what would you trust your life to? i would never let my pistol get in those harsh conditions, just so you know, but am interested in reliability. thanks.

I have a new Ruger P89, it only has 200 rounds through it, but on several threads in this forum, the Ruger P-series (http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FASubType?type=Pistol&subtype=Centerfire%20Autoloading) are some of the most reliable pull-trigger-go-bang pistols available, but they have other issues some people don't like, trigger travel, weight, bulk, etc.

Personally, I HATE shooting Glocks, but you just can't argue with a torture test like this:

My XD has been absolutely reliable, and my Kimber has been so ever since I shot out the tightness and stopped using crappy ammo. Sigs have a great reputation as well.

My most reliable never a jam has been my Beretta 92F 9mm, with the old non-decocking Taurus 92 and Browning HP MKIII the same. Glock 19 had a couple problems over 19 years and the Sig P220 with a few FTF when brand new but still very reliable. These pistols have had several thousands of rounds through each over the years I've owned them.
I've never had a failure with my Russian Makarov but haven't put much more than 1K rounds through it.
My 1911's will run a couple hundred rounds of reloads but then they need some cleaning to remain reliable.

my glock 19 was just like that reliable as heck and something i would trust my life too in any situation.
a ruger p95 i have alot of trust in and confidence they are built american tuff that is for sure.
and though my xd did break i think that that was a fluke, and i know from experience that it will function in the harshesed of conditions! i still trust it, and as soon as i get it back it will be back on the night stand to defend the home and family!

I've never had a failure with a Glock, a Sig or an H&K. 10's of thousands of rounds threw them.
Deffinatly CANNOT say the same about my experiances with Hi-Point, Springfield XD beretta or Ruger.

Only two guns ever jammed on me both ParaOrdnace. A P12 and a 9mm model. I just can't trust their offerings anymore. Really attractive pieces though.

I have a Bersa Thunder .380 ACP Duo Tone with about 1,100 rounds thru it. No problems even when dirty. I have run magazine after magazine thru trying to get it to have a problem and haven't had one yet.
I have used all types of 380 ammo from the cheapest to more expensive self defense loads with different types of bullets and so far it has gone bang everytime.
Now this mine and you may have different experiences.

Another Glock vote here. 2 of my 3 CHL weapons are Glocks...not because I love them but because I shoot them well and they work well.
The 3rd is a Wilson 1911.

please explain why that xd and ruger is in the same category with hi-point and what troubles you have had with them. it is easy to throw names around, but a little bit of background info would be nice, though i don't expect to hear any more about it which is the case 9 out of 10 times, but it would be nice. people like to say this or that and never fill in the rest of us with what they know or what they think they know! so please share!
I know this must come as a shock to Glock owners, but there are a LOT of reliable guns out there. Some of them are downright inexpensive too. The CZ-75B is a great gun and quite reliable, as are the Ruger P series, etc.
I have an old Ruger P-85 that serves duty as a loaner to new shooters. It's got over 30,000 rounds through it without a single malfunction. My CZ-75B has never malfunctioned either.
Heck, I have an old Llama .38 super from the '70's that has never had a malfunction. So much for those "unreliable" 1911's. Llama has never made a great gun yet mine hasn't had a single issue.
Personally, if you're just looking for a reliable home defense gun, I'd suggest checking out the Rugers. If they fit you and you shoot well with them, you can't do much better for the price. I hate their triggers, but of all the hanguns I own, a Ruger P-97 does duty as my main home defense pistol.

My Ruger P95, P97 and Glock 22 have all been 100 percent.
I owned a Springfield Mil Spec 1911A1 that was not totally reliable even with ball ammo. I got rid of it.
